Cherishing America’s “Pilgrim Soul”

In this crucial presidential election, Americans should ask themselves: what distinguishes great leaders and enables them to inspire the people they serve?

Charles Moore, biographer of Margaret Thatcher, noted that “if there was one unifying force in everything Mrs. Thatcher did, it was her love for her country…But great loves such as hers go beyond reason, which is why they stir others, as leaders must if they are to achieve anything out of the ordinary.”

In selecting a presidential candidate worthy of support, we should look for this impassioned, uncompromising love – not just for America’s power and prosperity, but for what the Republic means to its citizens and the world. As the poet William Butler Yeats wrote: “Many… loved your beauty with love false or true/But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you.”

That’s what America needs in this uncertain, anxious time: a leader who cherishes, and nourishes, the “pilgrim soul” of this uniquely favored land.
