Different Views of “Community Service”

Susan Hutchison, former chair of the Washington State Republican Party and GOP nominee for US Senate

You might expect Senate candidates to disagree on policies, but in today’s polarized politics they often differ on fundamental values as well. In the Voters’ Pamphlet in Washington State, candidates list their “Community Service” and Republican challenger Susan Hutchison, cites a wealth of involvements, including board membership for Children’s Hospital, Salvation Army, Young Life, the Seattle Symphony and much more.

On the other hand, the three-term US Senator, Maria Cantwell, offers only one brief sentence to describe her service in the community: “Maria is an avid hiker and outdoorswoman, who has summitted Mt. Rainier,” she writes, “and hopes to tackle more of our nation’s highest peaks.”

The fact that the Democrat views her hiking hobby as a form of community service tells you plenty about the sense of egotistical entitlement on the part of an arrogant and out-of-touch incumbent.

I'll grant you that Hiking is not what I or almost anyone else would consider community service if you grant me that private charities and institutions are not the only or even best way to serve people.

I've commented on this before, but liberals tend to focus less on charity in part because they want more baseline funding via taxation to provide some basic services to a broader range of people.

So it's a wonderful thing that people care about children, donate to children, and make sure if a kid gets sick they are given a leg up and helped by society, but as a Liberal I'd rather children and adults that did not have the resources for care be helped by society, ones worth as a man or women does not go away when reaching adulthood does it? More responsibility is of course expected of adults, but people are flawed creatures that sometimes need help, even as adults.

Some people do everything right and fall on hard times, others who eff up far more have the resources and family support via luck of the draw to get through it easier even though they messed up many more times than some others. We live in an unfair and unjust world, and the liberal solution is not to cherry pick out the worthy and unworthy of extra grace, it's to raise the baselines. To err on the side of helping the decent, knowing that some people that are just lazy and taking advantage will be helped too but that is a worthwhile cost. Focusing all ones attention on the easier cases, like innocent children absolves people of their societal responsibilities.

“liberals tend to focus less on charity in part because they want more baseline funding via taxation”

Ty…. name a time in your lifetime when there hasn’t been “baseline funding via taxation”. Name a time when that baseline funding has ever done anything other than increase.

We conservatives pay every bit of those confiscatory taxes.
Additionally, we give more to charity.
Liberals are selfish, me me me type people.

Nominal tax rates used to be as high as 90% in the US, during the war if I recall correctly. And even effective tax rates have been higher in the past.

        https://files.taxfoundation.org/20170804133536/Average-Effective-Tax-Rate-on-the-Top-1-Percent-of-U.S.-Households.png

So your assumption that it only ever goes up, is wrong.

What has changed is that there is less social solidarity and trust in government today, people (conservatives especially) are inherently more mistrustful of money being taken and spent by government for some common good, and so they have atavized themselves into some pre industrial frontier hunter gather model of government and taxation as an ideal to strive for. Never mind not a single one of them would prefer actually living in those worlds.

We, the liberals, have to save them from themselves.

        You are welcome, conservatives.

Tyrese, your link only deals with the top 1%. Also, it does not say it includes state taxes, local taxes, toll road fees, excise taxes, etc, etc. And I don't even see where Rizzo said that tax rates always increase. He said "baseline funding." Can you read? Can you comprehend what you read?

      • Ty  •  Oct 20, 2018 at 8:27 pm

Who cares about baseline funding? Ok, so that increases, so does the economy.

If total tax rates for federal and state and local were all capped at a combined 40%, but the economy and population continued to grow over time, then the "baseline funding" and tax revenue would continue to increase?

Who TF cares about that? IT's a stupid metric chosen by a disingenuous mind. Tax rates shifting over time is more relevant, the bigger and more relevant claim by conservatives are that taxes are too high, when or that they keep increasing overall when it's quite clear that is not the case. Marginal tax rates were MUCH higher in the past, and have gone down and up and all over the place. Historically, we are not overly taxed. Don't like higher state taxes in liberal states? or higher taxes in localities? Then move, stop bitching. Move to those thriving conservative metropolises that are being vastly outproduced by those higher tax liberal counties and states, that have more regulations as well.

You come to our house, and then whine and complain because you are tasked with the extra burden to take off your filthy choose and not track your filthy mud all over the floor. WHY ARE YOU OPPRESSING US, the REGULATIONS !!!!!

Fine, move, plenty of more conservative areas where they are much more lax with regulations, and lower taxed. But note, every single one of you conservatives who love nothing more than to complain. The closer you get to civilization, the more liberal it looks.

The more spartan and sparse an area, the more it really IS about what YOU and only you want. The more dense, the more other peoples considerations matter. Civilization, is a liberal project.

        Ty
        Your proposition is absolutely preposterous.
It is you leftists, not unlike locusts, who are fleeing their “Utopias” to escape to much less regulated, less taxed states. Then, like the locusts they are, they try to implement the very same leftists policies in which destroyed the states they fled.
They are incapable of connecting the dots.

      • Rizzo  •  Oct 21, 2018 at 4:10 pm

        Ty
Is there a greater example of US Liberal Utopia than San Francisco?
And all your talk of filth…. Is there any more filthy a city than San Francisco?
        SanFran = Filthy Liberal Utopia.
The connection is CLEAR AND EXACT.

      • Rizzo  •  Oct 21, 2018 at 4:15 pm

Yep… Trump is for the little guy.
The Republican Party is for the little guy.
Conservatism and the Free-Market is for the little guy.
Thank you for making that point!

In FY 2018 total US government spending on welfare — federal, state, and local — was “guesstimated” to be $1,091 billion, including $642 billion for Medicaid, and $449 billion in other welfare.

Government spending in the United States has steadily increased from seven percent of GDP in 1902 to almost 40 percent today.

Despite passing sweeping individual tax cuts, the federal government collected a record amount of income tax from Americans in fiscal 2018.
According to the Treasury Department’s monthly treasury statement, the federal government collected more than $1.68 trillion in taxes.

So Ty… what exactly are you talking about? Government has collected MORE tax revenue, it spends MORE than EVER, so what?

And, on top of that…. we conservatives GIVE MORE TO CHARITY.

  3. democrats are degenerates  •  Oct 18, 2018 at 11:51 pm

Medved, I think you missed the point. Cantwell doesn't do any community service but she couldn't leave that portion blank. So instead of actually doing some community service, she put something in there that would be acceptable to her voting base of sick, selfish, narcissists like Ty.

The thing that makes me laugh about your typical libtard hiker is that they "love" animals and nature. So what do they do? They put trails and bike paths through the few remaining forested areas. At the base of it all is just the fact that they are selfish and only care about themselves.

  4. Anthony Gordon  •  Oct 19, 2018 at 6:07 pm

I disagree that taking hikes cannot be a community service. If Cantwell were to take a REALLY LONG hike, she WOULD be doing the ultimate community service.

    • Rizzo  •  Oct 19, 2018 at 7:49 pm

      Now that’s funny!

OF COURSE Cantwell is an arrogant, egotistical and out-of-touch incumbent as is 90% of the Democratic Congress. Tell us something we don’t know about the sycophants in that Party – you can’t. We have an election in 2 weeks that will determine if America goes down the proverbial rathole of socialism/Marxism forever you’re talking about an anarchist.

A month ago I was standing in front Karl Marx’s birthplace in Trier, Germany; down the street Germans erected a statue of KM a couple of years ago. I didn’t spit or throw red paint on the statue, scream at or threaten Germans standing around it or break windows in his first home. I had an uncle that survived Utah Beach/Normandy ( where we also visited along with the American Cemetery and several other locales that still look the same as they did on D-Day). He was in 9th Armor Division and fought at the Remagen Bridge an hour North of Trier. He fought all the way Berlin getting shot 4 times in the process. I didn’t know any of this until his funeral at age 91. Another uncle flew 36 missions over Germany from England getting 3 Purple Hearts from shrapnel. He also bailed out in English Channel in December and nearly died of hypothermia. My Dad also survived WWII as a radarman on the USS Hornet which saw more action than any other aircraft carrier and is now a museum in Alameda CA (San Francisco Bay).

And of course America rebuilds Western Europe, Japan et al, sends Aid/aide around the world on a daily and, of course, we are the evil expansionists according to the democrats. This is such blatant ignorance perpetuated by the dems who constantly spew their filth, hatred, class separatist and violent ways and Michael’s and talking about a backpacking buffoon.

  6. Bevy  •  Oct 22, 2018 at 7:00 pm

    Hey Michael,
I noticed that too and was completely flabbergasted. I mean really?

I just hope that the people of Washington, that vote, can see the difference and not vote with the reasoning of who’s the cutest.
I would like to see a tally sheet of how Susan would have voted compared to Cantwell. Now that would be eye opening.
    I’m just a conservative!

  7. Captainbinkman  •  Oct 22, 2018 at 7:20 pm

    I voted for Susan today!
