Different Views of “Community Service”

Susan Hutchison, former chair of the Washington State Republican Party and GOP nominee for US Senate

You might expect Senate candidates to disagree on policies, but in today’s polarized politics they often differ on fundamental values as well. In the Voters’ Pamphlet in Washington State, candidates list their “Community Service” and Republican challenger Susan Hutchison, cites a wealth of involvements, including board membership for Children’s Hospital, Salvation Army, Young Life, the Seattle Symphony and much more.

On the other hand, the three-term US Senator, Maria Cantwell, offers only one brief sentence to describe her service in the community: “Maria is an avid hiker and outdoorswoman, who has summitted Mt. Rainier,” she writes, “and hopes to tackle more of our nation’s highest peaks.”

The fact that the Democrat views her hiking hobby as a form of community service tells you plenty about the sense of egotistical entitlement on the part of an arrogant and out-of-touch incumbent.
