Linda Hirshman, author and sex abuse activist, recently reaffirmed her intention to vote for Joe Biden – even though she fully believes Tara Reade’s outrageous charges against him.
Hirshman condemns liberal feminists of the 1990s who disrespected the women who said they’d been victimized by Bill Clinton as governor and president. Hirshman’s point is that even though those charges were mostly true, and even assuming Biden behaved abysmally with Tara Reade, other issues remain far more important.
But that argument collapses if Biden is lying about his behavior – that’s ongoing, current misconduct, not a fleeting incident from 27 years ago. Clinton wasn’t impeached for dalliance with an intern: he faced charges of perjury to a grand jury and obstruction of justice in deceiving the public.
Many Americans believe a candidate’s intimate behavior shouldn’t be an issue. But lying repeatedly and flagrantly to the American people isn’t personal, it’s profoundly political – and perpetually relevant.
