Ted Cruz got one thing right when he became the first officially announced presidential candidate: He launched his speech by telling his story, describing his parents and their struggles.

This might not win a nomination for the Republican senator from Texas, but history strongly suggests that voters will select the next president by choosing a favorite story, far more than they will weigh issues or even personalities. The public prefers biographical narratives that inspire, reassure or fascinate, and then provides a fitting climax by putting the protagonist in the White House. By this standard, current front-runners in both parties remain vulnerable candidates who count as anything but sure bets….

    I’m convinced that there really can be no frontrunner until the debates begin. From the debates of the last election I recall how a candidates popularity ebbed and flowed depending on their performances. Gingrich saw his star rise because he performed well, while Perry saw his potential candidacy quickly end because of his famous “oops.” I can envision someone like Rubio catching fire during the debates, while a Jeb Bush may appear much less charismatic and leaderesque.
