Impeachment Talk Can Only Damage Dems

email Email

Recent polls suggest 70% of Democrats support impeachment of President Trump—a preference ignoring obvious lessons from the recent past.

Only three presidents ever faced serious impeachment challenges, and the first two confrontations gave the voters no voice in the matter. Andrew Johnson was impeached in 1868 during his last months in office and he wasn’t running for re-election. Then with Richard Nixon a century later, momentum against him proved so powerful that he resigned before voters went to the polls for the mid-terms. Only Bill Clinton faced Congressional elections in the midst of an impeachment crisis—and he became the only president since the two-party system began to gain Congressional seats in the middle of his second term.

Americans may have disliked Clinton’s amorous adventures but they hated the idea of impeachment—and still do. If Democrats campaign for Congress promising turmoil, scandal-mongering and gridlock, they will lose—and deserve to lose.

    Character matters

    • Nani Tavares  •  May 4, 2018 at 5:27 pm

Actually it doesn't. Not to this generation of political correctness. And "character" implies perfection which no politician is. What we NEED is a person with back bone and one that can take the hits and give back as good as he gets. I am so tired of "nice".

Not to white evangelicals. 80% of them are conservatives first, scratching and clawing for as much of their political wants as they can get with any avatar that can get them there no matter how grotesque. It's the one silver lining of the Trump era, it shines the brightest light of the heavens onto just how full of @$#% evangelicals always were.

As to impeachment, unless Trump has done something over the top terrible, I think it would be a waste of time to try to impeach him. We knew he was a liar when he was elected, people did not care (least of all the "Godly" evangelicals) so that seems like a shallow reason to impeach. If he gets more unstable and tries to do more crazy things though, I think the adults need to have this tool in their pocket to protect the nation.

Ty…. did you support Bill Clinton? Do you continue to support Bill Clinton?
Has it been proven that Trump has done anything even remotely as bad as Bill Clinton? Has Trump gotten away with murder, like your hero, Ted Kennedy?
You leftists are pathetic… your hatred of evangelicals can only be described as Hitler'esque.

The best exchange on the liberal support for Clinton was summed up by Jasmine Guy on politically incorrect 20 years ago now.

You see, the left as a group never claimed to be some moral arbiters of justice and right when it came to sexual morality. But the right? Especially the evangelical crowd? That was their entire ballywick. I get why they are supporting Trump, naked self interest and power plays, he's the pathway to getting more of what they want, the part that is being stripped bare for all to see is the notion that the group EVER gave a damn about actual sexual morality, they care when it is convenient to them to care when politics are involved, because the higher God to so many of them is not the god of Abraham, it's conservatism and an added element that I've only recently realized with the polling.

A desire for renewed social dominance to claw back what was lost, and this is especially heightened in WHITE evangelicals. They are far more likely to support Trump over non white evangelical counterparts. It's almost as if there is some extra threat that singular variable confers, what could it be? What could be seen as a threat? Non white dominance of the culture? We're the ones that are supposed to be on top and dictate the standards for the nation, not the rest of you.

So get in line starbucks and PUT MERRY CHRISTMAS ON THOSE CUPS !!!!!!!!!!! Seems like a lack of chill that does not exist to the same degree for non white evangelicals. I think the fears of loss of racial dominance are causing additional agitation and lashing out in unrelated areas as certain large factions of the christian right seeks to regain control. But that is not going to happen, it's time to accept your place as social minorities on several issues in society where the bulk of the nation is not aligned with you. Learn to live with being a minority and get over it. Is it not the right that tells the whiny libs how great minorities in the US have it? It's almost as if some conservatives don't actually believe that with how hard they are fighting to not become that.

I'm still building my model, but those are my current thoughts on this section of the right.

Oh but Ty, that's not true. The Left has always claimed a moral superiority: pro-women, pro-Black, pro-illegal, pro-poor. They have sat on their emotional perch of political correctness and judge those who disagree as unworthy of civility and plain decency. They have bullied and used the Right's and especially Evangelicals desire to be fair, just, and nice against them. The smallest attempt at being good has turned into a demand for perfectionism. For the Left, it is that unless a person is perfect they have no right to call for good.

I am a stickler for fairness and that is one of the reasons I cannot accept Liberal doctrine. It reeks of injustice, hypocrisy and abuse. There is no love and little true compassion in their issues. It is an elitist group who believes that they alone know better.

The left are like terrorists. Terrorists use our standards of right and wrong against us. Terrorist seek to kill innocence. But, accidentally kill an innocent victim of circumstances, and they cry foul, like a stuck pig.

"the left as a group never claimed to be some moral arbiters of justice and right when it came to sexual morality"
Please explain #metoo. Why is Bill "Weinstein" Clinton not on the top of the list?

Keep up your Hitler'esque hatred of Evangelicals… it is very instructive of who the left REALLY ARE.

      • Rizzo  •  May 5, 2018 at 4:31 pm

Holy shit… Jasmine Guy and Politically Incorrect is what informs you.

"I get why they are supporting Trump"

        MAGA M/F'er…. MAGA!!!
EVERYONE BENEFITS FROM MAGA!!! All colors, cultures, creeds, genders, leftists, etc.
        That's why we SUPPORT TRUMP!

So impeachment only serves political ends? But I agree. Dems should pitbit off the table, and when we take the house ans senate, put it back on.

    • Rizzo  •  May 5, 2018 at 9:11 am

Typical leftist maneuver… they can NEVER be honest about their Anti-America agenda.

      • Diff  •  May 5, 2018 at 5:04 pm

We will do everything to make sure the president is a one term president. We learned at the heels of Mitch the bitch.

      • Rizzo  •  May 5, 2018 at 7:20 pm

You will try… just like you did with Hillary.
One big problem… America is on its way back to prosperity.
People, even some leftists, enjoy a little success and prosperity.

  3. Harvey Homan  •  May 11, 2018 at 1:48 pm

Impeaching Trump is a Liberal wet dream. They aren't going tore-take the House or Senate and instead will feel the red wave of disgust and anger that's been building in the guts of true Americans for much of the last 10 years.
