A Government Crackdown on Immoral Intimate Behavior?

While cultural conservatives worry over threats to traditional morality, few of us would favor aggressive governmental action to punish improper private relationships. In Indonesia, a nation of 200 million with the world’s largest Muslim population, a new criminal code on the verge of adoption bans all sexual relations outside of marriage, on pain of imprisonment. Not only would gay sex and extra-marital involvements be punishable by long sentences; even cohabitation by consenting, unmarried, hetero-sexual adults would bring incarceration for five years or more.

The strict new rules, drafted by the nation’s increasingly powerful Islamic parties, also ban any criticism of the nation’s president and expand punishments for the broadly defined crime of “blasphemy.” Americans may differ on standards of intimate behavior, but Indonesia’s frightening example reminds us of values of personal liberty that most citizens still share.

In our country, even the strongest backers of traditional marriage distrust the idea of an all-powerful government attempting to police our most intimate behavior.

I remember reading about Saudi funded Madrassas and influence of their strict and dogmatic version of Islam being funded and spread across Indonesia, a sort of Koch Industries assault on the idea space of the religious attitudes of a nation.

So as much as conservatives want to look more lightly on the Saudis because they are more friendly towards and working with Israel now against the great evil, the descendants of Cyrus the Great, remember. The Saudis are not our friends, and just because they play footsie and are not as hostile to Israel is no reason to warm attitudes towards them too much.

      1. Conservatives are as aware as the rest of us of the duplicitous nature of the Saudis, we sometimes play nice with unsavory types for a greater good or to deter a greater threat. Sometimes it works out (Egypt until Obama started meddling and helped elect the Muslim Brotherhood, who were then kicked out of power) and sometimes it does not and looks foolish with perfect hindsight. You are probably right about not warming to them too much but they are in face recently lightening up internally quite a bit. We will see how this progresses.
      2. What on earth do the "evil" Koch Brothers have to do with anything? Please explain to us you genius how the Koch Brother help fund religious persecution or assault the "idea space" of anyone? It has been clear for decades that the American Left is the intolerant, anti-religion, anti free speech, anti-fa loving side of the equation (unless it is Islam, in which case the terrible treatment of women, gays, ethnic and religious minorities is and rape culture is ignored and is not to be discussed publicly). Whoops, micro aggression
      3. No, conservatives as a rule long ago lost interest in what goes on in the bedroom between consenting adults despite what you may believe, we do not condone anti blasphemy laws or anti sodomy laws. Most of us were fine with legal protections for same sex couples, we just opposed the redefinition of and the consequent lessening of traditional marriage and its benefit to children and to society. And we opposed it being decided by a few judges rather than at the ballot box or with our elected representatives (in which case your side still would have won within a few years anyway. Assuming that's your side). We have already lost that battle and have moved on
      4. If you oppose the type of society Islam has enforced in Saudi Arabia or Indonesia then I assume you are as concerned as I am about increasing our flow of Islamic Immigrants to the US and following the footsteps of European rape culture and no go zones and gangs and riots? And pretending the problem does not exist and punishing those that complain with hate speech laws and persecution? Or will we be smart enough to not allow that to happen here? Not likely if snow flake progressives are in charge who would literally find my comments hate speech. Yes many Muslims are fine people, I know and work with them but lets be a little more selective on who we allow to come here, they need to assimilate, produce and believe in general with our values, this has nothing to do with "brown people" and everything to do with values and work skills and fitting into society

        BTW

BTW the Koch Brothers employ 10's of thousands of people and donate millions to charity, much of which you would likely be on board with. they sound pretty bad to me….

To the leftists, the Koch brothers just represent another target to which they can apply their Alinsky tactics: RULE 12 “Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.“

The article was about Indonesia. Not Saudi Arabia. And i don't know why you think conservatives have some fondness for Saudi Arabia. We don't. It is members of the cult of diversity such as yourself that love everything except American culture. In the past, Saudi Arabia was important because we needed their oil. Those days are long gone.

And what does Koch Industries have to do with Islamic totalitarianism. The Koch brothers are pro-liberty. That is why their influence upsets you so.

Tyrell, please tell me you were drinking before typing this comment. It is even more nonsensical than your usual drivel.

I am more concerned about the evil that is happening here. You should be also. Wake up Michael.
