The Left’s Dubious Diversity

The left cherishes a peculiar, pernicious concept of “diversity” as the New York Times demonstrated with its reporting on the new president of Cuba. The newspaper’s headline proclaimed “A Transition of Power in Cuba Sends a Signal on Diversity” and a caption to a photo declares “the members of the Council of State are notably diverse.”

Sorry, New York Times, but they aren’t diverse at all: every one of them is a dedicated Communist, with a slavish reverence for the thuggish, murderous Castro regime. The presence of several women and a few dark-skinned Afro-Cuban faces in public positions does nothing to alter the total ideological uniformity—a uniformity required as a point of law during the last 59 years of the Castro Brothers’ tyrannical rule.

The diversity that matters to liberals is merely racial, while they ignore the more meaningful diversity of ideals and values, scorning conservatives and embracing communist Cuban thugs.

I love asking leftists why they don't value ideological diversity as much as other kinds of diversity. Their reactions are priceless.

    • Ty  •  Apr 30, 2018 at 1:09 am

Oh please, the right does not value ideological diversity unless it's in a sphere where they are WEAK and underrepresented and LOST the culture/idea wars. Like Hollywood and Colleges. Then they play the eternal victim card about how oppressed we big bag liberals are to them. But in conservative strongholds? Please, they want a MONOLITH of conservative ideas and thought. Where are the liberals on talk radio as hosts? Nowhere to be found, and the market drives that because conservatives mainly want to listen to their own trashy ideas parroted back to them.

My favorite delusion that never gets old is the assumption that the reason liberals like myself do not go along with conservative attitudes and viewpoints, is that I've not been exposed to the grandeur of the conservative case!

As for me, I LOVE listening to conservatives so long as every once in awhile a liberal (i.e. correct) viewpoint breaks through those thick conservative walls they call skulls. I like it when they come on Bill Mahers show. The more the merrier. I have heard the gamut of the conservative argument, and there are oceans of inadequacy in their world view just waiting to be scraped bare for all to see.

Say what you will. But, the fact is, because the left owns the levers of propaganda, they mistakenly believe they are right, and that people agree with them. Leftism is a complete failure, and any argument to the contrary is absolutely laughable. People live their lives, largely in a conservative way.
No amount of propaganda has or will change that.

"Please, they want a MONOLITH of conservative ideas and thought."
        – No, we will just settle for a little logic, reason and facts… maybe a dabble of time-tested philosophy too.
Oh Wait… I just described conservative ideas and thought. Oh well, they are one of the same.

      • Rizzo  •  Apr 30, 2018 at 11:58 pm

And… Don't forget about how the left bans conservative free-speech on college campuses.
So terrified are the left, that they may be exposed to a different voice…. a viewpoint outside of their bubble, that they ban it.

It's ironic that Michael takes this position on "ideological diversity" when he was kicked out of Salem Media for not being sufficiently pro-Trump back in 2016.

  3. Toby Katz  •  Apr 27, 2018 at 5:33 pm

Years ago William Buckley defined diversity at Harvard as "liberals of every race, sex and nationality."

I do not see why it is ironic that Michael Medved takes this position on ideological diversity since he was kicked out of… What is the problem here? I do not see it. It seems to me he is right that there is not sufficient ideological diversity in many liberal to leftist institutions and in Cuba. Obviously there can be similar problems with conservatives. But so much of the media, entertainment and higher education have problems with diversity. What it means and what sort is desirable. I was thinking lately about the issue of diversity in terms of agriculture and forestry. Farm crops are safer from pests when there is a mixture of different crops in the fields rather than a monoculture. Or forests are better with a diversity of trees and plants. But this is only true if the different plants are compatible and none runs amok. The purpose of diversity in agriculture is to improve yields by using compatible species. Likewise cities use a variety of different trees to line streets, whereas 50 years ago the Twin Cities had only American elms on the streets. When Dutch Elm Disease invaded the cities, all the trees had to be destroyed. Now only a small percentage of trees belong to any single species. As a result, the emerald ash borer is only killing a small share of all boulelvard trees, not all of them. But, incompatible trees or crops are worse than monocultures. Now, perhaps I am so think-headed to understand, but the problem of ideological diversity is one that one can consider independently of what one thinks about Salem Media. And of course conservative intolerance is a possibility or sometimes a fact, but not one that discredits the main idea about a lack of ideological diversity in Cuba. And furthermore one sees this problem in other aspects of leftist policy. Am I mistaken?

Medved is wrong yet again. There are PLENTY of Cubans who are either critical of Castro or they outright don't like him. And some of those people sit at the table and argue their points but MOST Cubans support the revolution. You won't find many Cubans on the island lamenting for the return of US imperialism.

And where is the diversity in US politics? If Cuba is not diverse because they all believe in "Communism" and Castro (sic), how can you argue America is diverse when they all believe in capitalism and god? How many non-believing anti-capitalists are elected officials in America, at any level??

Again and again, liberals are being revealed as hipocrits.

    • Rizzo  •  Apr 28, 2018 at 10:46 am

They have no guiding principles or consistent underlying belief system.
They are united by hate for Trump, and the notion that they identify with being a democrat, therefore they must oppose everything Republican.

      It's quite pathetic.

How about this for diversity? Black, brown, white, gay, straight, LGBTQABCD, Muslim, Christian, etc., if you are an AMERICAN CITIZEN: Jobless claims rise modestly; Americans receiving unemployment aid lowest since 1973.

    MAGA!!!!!

MAGA For All…. even you UnAmerican Leftists!

The unemployment rate fell to 3.9 percent in April, an 18-year low, even as nonfarm payrolls rose by just 164,000, the BLS says.
Economists surveyed by Reuters had expected payroll growth of 192,000 and the jobless rate to drop by one-tenth of a percent to 4.0 percent.
The closely watched average hourly earnings number rose by 4 cents, equating to a 2.6 percent annualized gain, a shade less than expected.

Don't be so sore Ty…. without these respites of success and prosperity, there would nothing for you leftists to pillage, on your self-destructive campaign to socialist utopia.

The GOP is the party of Trump. When a republican looks in the mirror, what they are seeing is a final picture of Dorian Grey in the form of trump. Sad

  10. Rizzo  •  May 5, 2018 at 8:07 am

The GOP is the party of individual freedom, personal responsibility, and success for America!

MAGA…. It's more money for you leftist to pillage.
April was best month in history for U.S. budget, according to CBO figures

Well-known, white racist, Jason Whitlock…(sarcasm Ty)
“If You Say Trump Has A Good Idea, You Get Kicked Out Of The Black Race.”
    The left is so tolerant.
