American Miracle

AT KEY TURNING POINTS IN HISTORY, AMERICA CATCHES EVERY BREAK

The history of the United States displays an uncanny pattern: at moments of crisis, when odds against success seem overwhelming and disaster looks imminent, fate intervenes to provide deliverance and progress. Historians may categorize these incidents as happy accidents, callous crimes or the product of brilliant leadership, but the most notable leaders of the last 300 years have identified this good fortune as something else – a reflection of divine providence.

In The American Miracle, bestselling author and radio host Michael Medved recounts some of the most significant events in America’s rise to prosperity and power, revealing a record of improbabilities and amazements that demonstrate what the Founders believed all along: that events unfolded according to some master plan, with destiny playing an unmistakable role in lifting the nation to greatness. Among the stirring, illogical episodes described here:

*A band of desperate religious refugees find themselves blown hopelessly off course, only to be deposited at the one spot on a wild continent best-suited for their survival

*A beaten army, surrounded by a ruthless foe and on the verge of annihilation, manages an impossible escape due to a freakish change in the weather

* A famous conqueror known for seizing territory, frustrated by a slave rebellion and a frozen harbor, impulsively hands over a tract of land that doubles the size of the United States

*A frontier carpenter discovers gold at virtually the same moment a government clerk nearly 2,000 miles away defies the president and risks arrest to secure American control of California

* A weary solider picks up three cigars left behind in an open field and notices the stogies have been wrapped in a hand-written description of the enemy’s secret battle plans—a revelation that gives Lincoln the supernatural sign he’s awaited in order to free the slaves

When millions worry over the nation losing its way, Medved’s sweeping narrative, bursting with dramatic events and lively portraits of unforgettable, occasionally little-known characters, affirms America as “fortune’s favorite,” shaped by a distinctive destiny from our beginnings to the present day.

MICHAEL MEDVED’s daily three-hour radio program, The Michael Medved Show, reaches 5 million listeners on more than 300 stations coast to coast. He is the author of 12 other books, including the bestsellers The 10 Big Lies About AmericaHollywood vs. AmericaHospitaland What Really Happened to the Class of ’65? He is a member of USA Today’s board of contributors, a former chief film critic of the New York Post and, for more than a decade, cohosted Sneak Previews, the weekly movie-review show on PBS. Michael now gets it. He's a perfectionist, used to scholars taking the lead, but understands Providence in ways no one else has mentioned. You'd do well to purchase this book. I'm forgiving Michael and so should you.

Michael's pre-election viscious anti-Trump comments upset me because he was so soft on Clinton's crimes and misdemeanors and her pro-partial-birth abortion stance. However he has been a man of his word and has been amazingly supportive of the President-elect since the election. I've appreciated his wealth of knowledge and his clarification of puzzling issues. He's being objective and is solidly back in my good graces. The story of early America at Thanksgiving time was fascinating and I plan to give his new book to many at Christmas.

    Michael,
I just heard the end of the 3'rd hour today. The pastor who mentioned his concern about Trump's choice of Steve Bannon for his Chief of Staff, (I think that is his choice) is totally right . This man who is quoted as "providing a platform for the alt-right" is of course referring to Richard Spencer, a dangerous man who's goal, similar to Hitler's, to create a pure society, translated :no blacks, no people of color, and no Jews. I refer you to this last Sunday's Washington Post article describing the euphoria at Spencer's gathering of like-minded
disenfranchised white males who were shouting Sieg Trump accompanied with the disgusting Heil Hitler salute. I also recommend The Daily Wire article written by Michael Knowles , An Actual Conservative's guito the Alt-Right: 8 Things You Need to Know,
Sept 26, 2016. My husband who has done extensive research on these people since the 1980's,
has been bombarding Prager, you, and other conservatives on these people who have grown in numbers due to the anonymity of social media with their cutesy symbols of Peppy the frog , who is sometimes wearing "Trump" hair. The number 1488, 14 words that expose their mission statement, and 8 represents the 8'th letter of the alphabet, the letter H + H=HH and we all know who that stands for. The caller was right. If Trump is to have any credibility, Bannon has to go. White Nationalism is in bed at the White House.

Enjoying your book on American Miracle immensely. While I'm at it, can I make a cultural comment? As a nonprofessional linguistic I have a particular interest in American English figures of speech, especially ones that don't make sense to immigrants. I would like to see you do what you can to advise people to stop using the figure "jaw dropping." Can you imagine what a second-language speaker of English gets out of this. Roy

A miracle, because the founders were incapable of forming a country based on the reason of the enlightenment. Balderdash
