Necessary Allies, Not Implacable Enemies

email Email

To place our polarized politics in proper perspective, conservatives need to look back at the nearly half-century struggle known as “the Cold War.” The Soviet Union and its satellites really did amount to an “Evil Empire” and the US and our allies constituted the necessary counterweight of goodness and decency.

But many of the most important nations in the West—including Britain, France, Germany and Canada—were really “welfare states” with centralized, government-dominated economic policies, well to the left of anything the American Democratic Party demands for the US today.

Moreover, many domestic liberals—including Harry Truman, John Kennedy and Senator Scoop Jackson—played heroic roles in opposing the tyrannical menace of international Communism. This history should encourage conservatives to place our current conflicts in the right context. In this dangerous world, contemporary liberals—for all their wrong-headed ideas on health insurance, taxes or social issues—ought to count as necessary allies, not implacable enemies.

There are no Harry Truman's, John F. Kennedy's or Scoop Jackson's in today's leftist, Democratic Party. For the most part, they are anti-American zealots. I wish they had somebody that could stand-up as a "necessary ally". But alas, they are all in lockstep, goose-stepping to a far-left pied-piper.

Not with those Rizzo goggles on. Put them on and everyone that considers themselves a liberal looks like a walking Che Guevarra worshiper. And don't get me started on the Rizzo headphones, the distortions on those are insane.

Ty: I want the US to be a healthy mix between relatively free markets to more regulated markets, and some socialized services

Person wearing Rizzo headphones hears : I WANT FULL COMMUNISM !!!!!! I WANT A GOVERNMENT TAKEOVER OF EVERYTHING !!!!!!!!! I want to tell people when they can live or die, and how much care they can get from death panels, I want EVERYONE to be EQUAL !!!!!!! Tax rates on the wealthy = 100% until there ARE no wealthy people, Venezuela is too SOFT and market driven, Chavez was a lightweight.

So agree! American values have been so distorted beginning in the Vietnam era.

Ty: I want the US to be a healthy mix between relatively free markets to more regulated markets, and some socialized services

Rizzo: That's GREAT! You and I are the same page. I think government is far too invasive too.
    Markets are not relatively free.

2015 was a record-setting year for the Federal Register, according to numbers the Competitive Enterprise Institute in Washington, D.C., released.

The publication of the federal government’s rules, proposed rules and notices amounted to 81,611 pages, higher than last year's 77,687 pages and higher than the all-time high of 81,405 pages in 2010. And these rules are on top of all the old rules. The old rules don't go away.

So, I'm with you Ty…. let's get our markets back to being "RELATIVELY FREE"!

I knew I could eventually get through your immense, thick skull.

Hey Jim, you live in California right? I heard ceding from the USA is going to be on the ballet in 2018. So if someone invades your no gun "nation", how does Californians plan to defend itself? You sometimes wonder where the Liberals get their ideas from huh?

      • john  •  Aug 4, 2017 at 10:50 pm

I have lived in Ca. all my life. I want to assure you that we are amassing a huge transgender and LGBT army that will defeat any threat with a non stop barrage of PC, Climate Change and Marxist rhetoric that will stop a charging herd of water buffalos.

You're living in the past. There are no Truman's (I grew up in Kansas City), JFK's or Scoop Jackson's for God's sake. Joe Lieberman was the last normal human being in their Party and they tarred and feathered him out of the Party because he wasn't radical enough!! The Democrats are basically goons who threaten us every day verbally (and occasionally violently) now that they've been outed by Wikileaks's with their hideous crimes of collusion, corruption AND criminality. If you think Americans are going to go back to being appeasement minded cowards wringing our hands for another 16 years of apologizing for being politically incorrect and being told by Liberals that Republicans are responsible for being the most violent nation in the history of the world, then you're friggin nuts. We're not gonna do it Michael. Do you realize the "new norms" we now have: huge increases in taxes and poverty, terrorist attacks and cop assassinations, Obamacare which is NOcare, personal harassment and threats by the IRS and Justice Dept. if your Republican. Lieing is now cool and normal and encouraged if the ends justify the means for Democrats – Obama lied daily and not one Republican politician advised him that he was missing his clothing. When you get away with corruption by constant and consistent intimidation with no rebuttal, the thugs keep it up. They will never stop. Trump stopped them and you hate his guts and so does McCain (who calls him a dictator), Kasich and all the other usual suspects. I'm fed up with Republicans who look me right in the face on TV saying give us the House, the Senate, the Presidency and we will save the Republic. And you try to explain why Obama is a nice guy who was tricked, duped, misled by anonymous Party members on and on and on. None of those explanations mean anything when compared to his actions. You act like we are the anarchists, thugs, racists and homophobes. That's what the Democrats call us every goddamn day. You know what? I am one of those, I'm so sorry. I forgot I was white.

    • Rizzo  •  Aug 1, 2017 at 1:22 pm

I mean seriously, is there even one sane mind among the Dems?
Is there one that knows and respects the US Constitution?
Is there one of them that loves our American Heritage?
Is there even one among them that's not dead-set on destroying America?
They have ALL gone off the radical deep-end, dead-end, leftist's path.

I would love to be proven wrong.

      • Jim Bird  •  Aug 1, 2017 at 3:54 pm

Well stated and you will never be proven wrong!

      • Truth hurts  •  Aug 7, 2017 at 11:17 pm

Wow! You make a plea for sanity from a totally insane commenter, Jim Bird.

    • john  •  Aug 4, 2017 at 10:55 pm

LOVE IT!!!! There's hope. Ohbutthole slit the throat of the Republic on his way to letting all the muslims into this country. The press is the real threat. Rome started out a Republic, fell into a Democracy and finally died by an oligarchy.

      • Ty  •  Aug 4, 2017 at 11:34 pm

And they say the liberals are the nuts. What an echo chamber.

  4. Nani Tavares  •  Aug 2, 2017 at 11:32 pm

Juan William of the Fox's the Five said something that I have to ask a question. He said that one of the University said that if they left it to merit and SAT scores, their college would be filled with Asians. So the question is, are Liberals saying that other races are NOT the equal academically of Asians?

    • Jim Bird  •  Aug 3, 2017 at 12:15 pm

Liberals are always hypocrites, liars and thugs, and when proven so, have explanations why – "….you're racists, bigots and homophobes and are too stupid to understand the nuances of our Progressive agenda for the world and you! Seig Heil!!! Good observation Nani.

    • Ty  •  Aug 3, 2017 at 6:03 pm

      Liberal here. Yes.

Large chunks of the asian population immigrated to the US by planes and are selected from the higher skilled segments of their population. Not just asians, africans too, same with the indian population. These are not random samples of the population, the are the cream of the crop. These are the elites, not just in resources from human capital. You could flood the entire freshmen class of many elite schools with nothing but that hyper elite group of people. Do you want to?

But beyond that, I happen to have an opinion that is violently rejected by most liberals, that there are group differences in average aptitude among different populations, including fuzzily defined "races." The consequence of that is precisely what we observe, there are not as many members of some groups scoring certain scores on standardized tests like the SAT compared to other groups.

This is all part of the inequality built into nature itself (or GOD if you are so inclined, even religious people who claim God is JUST almost NEVER try to claim God is FAIR). People are not equal in their abilities, and this is an important lesson to take in, ESPECIALLY you conservatives who want to place ALL of the responsibility for outcomes in life on the individual.

NO ONE EARNS their EFFING aptitude and intelligence. NO ONE. That is a gift of nature, and it affects the fates of men. In that world (i.e. the world we live in, not your FANTASY world where outcomes are just a function of VALUES and being responsible!), I do NOT want some PURE meritocracy in all spheres of society. Because society does not base ones outcomes 100 percent off what YOU put into something.

As a liberal, I take this view and allow it to temper my PURE reliance on markets and individuals to lift themselves higher. Some can't. Some are born with weak legs who try HARDER than many of you and come up shorter. So when I see people struggling financial and NOT able to afford healthcare costs or insurance costs, I want SOCIETY to socialize SOME of those kinds of costs in society. EVEN if Nature or GOD chose not to gift everyone with the same aptitude, the same capacity to thrive, or in some cases some people have it and chose poorly, because I do NOT see human beings as THROW away REFUSE whose ONLY worth is what they produce. Individual and group differences STRENGTHEN my liberal intuitions, and as far as I can tell, undercut the core legitimacy of the conservative tendency to place the entire onus on human behavior.

      • john  •  Aug 4, 2017 at 11:08 pm

'Onus on human behavior". How are things in Detroit going for ya. More jails seem to be filled with thugs that can't seem to get their "human behavior" under control. Drugs are still ruining human behavior by the trainloads. Illegals are being let into this country and they continually can't seem to get their "human behavior" under control. There is a book that says that "there are none that do good, no not one!' "Human behavior" seems to be getting worse and worse and it's leaking into all facets of life. But there's hope. Evolution assures is that random mutations plus natural selection will improve the race.

      • Ty  •  Aug 4, 2017 at 11:58 pm

Detroit? Why always Detroit? Did you forget Chicago? I keep hearing there is nothing but decline there too. Never mind literally scores of withering and dying small towns and rural areas where some singular factory closes and the entire region turns into a depression level economy. In general, it's the cities that are thriving, where the liberals dominate. So spare me this cherry picked nonsense.

Denver Colorado is doing great, Seattle, San Francisco, Austin Texas, NY, etc etc. Trump said something sensible recently (probably by mistake). He said people in areas like upstate NY where nothing is happening (hmm, I wonder which party dominates there????) should move to where the jobs are.

Also, more generally, I never said ones own behavior has nothing to do with outcomes in life, it's one of the single biggest factors in the outcome in a life, if not THE biggest. I was only trying to get it through your THICK conservative LEAD plated Skulls that that is NOT all that goes into the outcome of a life, and some of what goes on is outside the individuals control. The point of that was to get you thick headed conservative types to TEMPER some of those randian supermensch style models of society where everyone rises or falls PURELY based on their own efforts. That is an incomplete model of the world we actually live in, and it is what allows otherwise decent people to brush aside concerns over peoples outcomes and trials in life.

That malignant shield of ideology, tosses aside observations from the real world that don't fit the model where any bad results can be blamed on something other than how we structure society. Conservatives love this because if anything bad happens, it's much easier to blame the catastrophes in life on the individual, if it's ALL about Their behavior, THEIR values, THEIR effort, then anything bad that happens to them not explicitly related to some directed harm against them is on THEM and no one else. Nice and neat, nothing wrong with us for walking by and letting someone bleed out, or go bankrupt because they can't afford medical bills, it's ALL on them.

Such a fantastically neat little bubble world ideology that reinforces that fantasy. Enter me, the Liberal, whose high crime is to hold up a mirror to the real world and deny you your fantasies. That's right, I won't let you craft that twisted and incomplete fantasy model in front of me.

    • Nani Tavares  •  Aug 3, 2017 at 11:31 pm

So Liberals ARE saying that some races ARE naturally superior to other races. And the answer to that is government doing what God does not.

This is insulting in so many ways, I don't know where to start. If a person is born with a gift, say to play exceptional football, should the government be compelled to either punish the star with crippling taxes or make sure that everyone who plays football but is not as gifted get millions of dollars? Are Liberals saying that a person born with a disability is not as good as one born "normal"? And the "normal" not as good as the gifted?

Liberals have no faith in humanity do they? They do not believe that a person can succeed without outside help. It takes an awful lot of arrogance to see not someone thru making right decisions, sheer determination, and the guts to dream as having the possibility to make it, but someone NEEDING them, the government, and their betters. In their zeal to "equalize" and to be fair, they do not understand that they START OUT with the attitude that people are NOT equal.

      • Rizzo  •  Aug 4, 2017 at 9:42 am

I think you nailed it. Many leftists, like Ty, are atheists. That belief, or more accurately, non-belief, makes it so much easier for them to play God.
It is why they think they are so qualified to deliver us to Utopia.

This moron has the audacity to say he doesn't see human's "ONLY worth as what they produce", but SURELY he does… Because he has NO PROBLEM STEALING WHAT OTHERS PRODUCE. The "rich", and those who produce, their "ONLY WORTH", in Ty's world, is their ability to fund his Utopian Dream. So you can spare us ALL, your FALSE, NOBLE, "LIBERAL INTUTITIONS".

      • Ty  •  Aug 4, 2017 at 4:12 pm

You used the word superior, not me. For the record, most liberals disagree with my assumptions about some average group differences. When they see differences between groups in outcomes they attribute most of it to the sphere that aligns with their world view. An External locus of control.

It's the legacy of racism, the legacy of slavery, issues related to poverty, white privilege, etc. etc.

I do not argue that there is NO lingering effects from past racism and slavery and the effects of greater poverty, but as time as marched on, the country and its institutions have become far less racist and far more meritocratic. It's not about white privilege, if it was, why do asians do so well? Why to black Nigerians who immigrate to the US do so well? Why do indians? If it were really a function of racism and privilege, than non white elites would be similarly shut out and pushed out. Actually, there is evidence for that for asians, there would be even more in elite schools on a more pure test score basis, but asians are still vastly overrepresented based on population. This undercuts the argument for a white boys club.

And therein lies the rub, the more EQUAL and JUST and FAIR we make society, the more the differences we see are based on differences in the individual. Enter the conservative delusion.

The conservatives see much of the above, but their focus based on their ideological preference for in Internal locus of control, is to assert the differences we see are based on behavioral differences.

        Values, work ethic, discipline, etc.

I do not deny that all of those aspects of a person have a strong influence on outcomes. But they are not ALL that matters. Have ANY of you EVER gone to this thing called elementary school? High school? College? Any of them? You remember having this strange thing called "classmates?" Now, I want you to recall times when it was clear that some classmates were struggling with concepts, repeatedly, while some other classmate almost always got the concepts quickly and could more easily make logical connections between concepts. DID ALL of the people who struggled more just not try? Were ALL of them just more LAZY? Just lacking discipline? Have you EVER seen someone who was sharp and quick to pick up concepts not seem to work as hard and slough off?

I ask these childlike questions because the answers should be obvious, even to you conservatives. Natural aptitude, is different in different people. Some people are SMARTER than others, and that intelligence IS-NOT-EARNED. It's a lottery of nature, and you are more likely to roll higher stats if your PARENTS were smarter too.

BOTH the liberal and conservative models of outcome are wrong, it's NOT just about environment, and NOT just about personal behavior and attitude. What you are born with matters an awful lot. And those "gifts" are not distributed equally. I wish they were, then the model of a meritocracy would be more legitimate because MUCH more of peoples outcomes would be based on their own efforts. But to live in a world, where people are born with less ability, AND try hard and do the right things, but because the market does not VALUE effort, it values RESULTS, they get scraps…

THAT is a world I want to intervene in. Not to make sure everyone makes the same money, not to make sure everyone drives a fancy car, or lives in some prime real estate location, but ABSOLUTELY to make sure that EVEN IF ones talents and skills and efforts were not enough to allow them to afford healthcare they are not allowed to just DIE, we socialize those costs.

You used the word "superior" because you like most others actually BELIEVE that being SMARTER makes you a "superior" human being. No. It makes you smarter, not necessarily better. But the meritocratic market rewards smarter people just as much if not more than people who work hard in modern society, most of all to people who have both attributes. The market is not supposed to give a damn about your values, or contributions to a community, your decency as a human being. More like, what do you produce? What is your worth to this company? Oh, one of you @ 25 dollars an hour does the work of 2 employees? Let's see, should I keep 2 people like you? or hire 5 employees at 10 dollars an hour? same payout, with a 20% increase in productivity. THAT's the market. And because I am NOT of the right, because I do NOT want to measure the WORTH of a man PURELY based on what he produces, I want some redistribution to help people out. I am WILLING to pay more taxes for that. And even though I know there will be free riders in any system, people who might not need the help but choose to rely on the generosity on society anyway, I am willing to put up with some of that. And it goes back to the core difference in attitude between a liberal and conservative soul.

I want to err on the side of Helping the decent rather than punishing the wicked. You want to err on the side vengeance and retribution and making sure the cheats are Punished !!!!!!! And if a dozen decent people are burned in the process, so be it.

I'll take my affinity for grace and mercy over your vindictive retribution any day. It's interesting, as an Atheist, I'm more "christian" than you and most evangelicals in terms of my attitudes towards my fellow man.

      • Rizzo  •  Aug 4, 2017 at 7:51 pm

Ty… You are such a disingenuous fraud. You keep talking about people dying in the streets. You act like we don't spend BILLIONS of dollars on welfare and the likes.
We have more than accounted for all of your stupid-ass examples. We conservatives are trying to reduce the waste, abuse and fraud, and begin to bend the curve back toward personal responsibility. We have allowed you leftists to socialize the hell out of America… Remember, even Canada has a higher economic freedom score. But, to a leftist like you Ty, that's not enough. You must destroy even more individual freedom, you must allow for even less personal responsibility and most of all, you MUST PUNISH SUCCESS.

If you are poor, and you were born in America, you have won life's lottery.

Allow me to refer you back to "The Success Sequence"

Research proved that young people, whatever their background, could minimize any chance of long-term poverty by taking thee simple steps: graduating from high school, getting a job—any job—right after graduation from high school or college, and bearing children only after marriage, not before.

Follow the DAMN RULES… and save us all from your NON-SENSE!

      • Ty  •  Aug 4, 2017 at 11:40 pm

The poor in the US have won lifes lottery compared to the poor in most non first world nations. If I was a conservative, I would be content with being better than the ABSOLUTE gutters on earth. But I am not a conservative so I want us to do even better.

Like I've said before, be grateful this nation is filled with more than your kind of person. Else we'd still be living in log cabins, because they were betting than what came before so why bother pushing for better. Child labor issues? Why bother with stricter standards because in the past and in other places, children can be used as Slaves!

It's worse in place X, ergo do not bother trying to improve things even more where it's already better than X…

Yeah… no. That is a very conservative, and very TERRIBLE attitude to have.

      • Rizzo  •  Aug 5, 2017 at 12:27 am

Ty… Your total ass-clownedness is brightly shining again.
Of course, MORON, conservatives want to do better… And as history clearly shows, it IS AMERICAN FREEDOM THAT HAS ALWAYS ENABLED THAT IMPROVEMENT.
IT'S NOT GOVERNMENT that lead to the industrial revolution. It's not government that created the greatest, wealthiest nation in the history of the world. And it's certainly not government that lead people from living in cabins. You are a f'ing fool!
Government is not making anything better. America is not just better than the gutters of the Earth. America is the greatest country to ever exist, you FOOL!

      • Nani Tavares  •  Aug 5, 2017 at 12:55 am

Oh it sounds so wonderful and loving to eliminate the suffering of those who don't succeed. Only to do that, Liberals have to take money that they did NOT earn. The "redistribution" of wealth implies that the person doing the redistributing has a right to the wealth. I am sorry but in any book, even the Bible, that is called stealing. I don't care what excuse you give, what violins you play, it is still money that nobody but the person who earned it is ENTITLED to. We have raised an entire generation of people who think they are entitled to somebody else's money just for breathing. And a whole bunch of people who, in a feel good moment, has no shame in stealing from someone else.

This is the bottom line. You can't make people feel bad for not "giving", "sharing", "helping" when YOU begin with STEALING.

      • Nani Tavares  •  Aug 5, 2017 at 1:02 am

And I am very glad that Liberals don't mind paying. As long as it is YOUR money, the money that YOU earned, you can spend it anyway you want, pay more taxes than required, redistribute YOUR wealth. But leave me and mine out of it.

      • Rizzo  •  Aug 5, 2017 at 8:09 am

Apparently, for Godless Heathens, it's very easy and natural for them to do.

Hmm… how can we make the diamond even better.

RULES to FOLLOW if you don't want to be poor in America, if you want to be a contributor to American society, and want to make Ty COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT!

        1. Graduate from high school – Ty: ooooh that's waaaay toooo difficult!
        2. Get a job—any job—right after graduation from high school or college – Ty: you mean I'm suppose to get a job?
        3. Bear children only after marriage, not before. – Ty: you expect the impossible. That type of personal responsibility is unreasonable.

  5. Jim Bird  •  Aug 3, 2017 at 1:47 am

On a totally different subject of astounding incredulity, why and what are Lamar Alexander and the Wicked Witch of the West, Patty Murray (whatever the hell her name is) from Seattle, getting together about "….to seek a compromised solution for BOcare…." – Translation: single-payer, no more doctors, govt. run healthcare.

  6. Jim Bird  •  Aug 4, 2017 at 9:35 am

Charles Krauthammer – "We are in very dangerous times" referring to Mueller and the anti-Trump grand jury (ALL DC HILLARY VOTERS HALF OF WHICH DONATED TENS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS HER CAMPAIGN), hand-picked by Mueller, on Fox last night.
It looks like you and your republican ilk have overthrown the Republic and started a bloody Civil War, Michael. Why do you hate Trump so much? I have no words for my disgust for you and the GOP. Mueller rigged the jury and will get Trump removed from office. Trump is honest and loud about it, BFD, HE'S HONEST. THIS LIBERAL DISEASE THAT HAS INFECTED THE GOP IS BEYOND SICKENING. NO MORE WORDS, NO MORE GOP, NO MORE COUNTRY.

    • Jim Bird  •  Aug 4, 2017 at 10:18 am

Forgot one point, Mueller was an under-secretary to none other than James Comey, that pillar of intellectual honesty and pristine ethics. When you drain the SWAMP, the vermin always go on the attack.

      • Nani Tavares  •  Aug 4, 2017 at 3:51 pm

Jim, I never thought I'd say this but I am truly afraid that the Liberals will remove Trump. They have broken law after law and got away with it. They have defined what is and is not. This Mueller investigation has turned into an obvious search to pin something on Trump. What and who is to stop them from simply taking something Trump (or/and his children) said and pronounce it as perjury?

I watch The Five discuss the leaked transcript and all the Liberal Juan Williams could talk about was that the documents proved that Trump was not a good deal maker! I mean as it was read, I kept thinking "that's treason" and I never use that word lightly.

You know that I never liked Trump; I still don't like the man personally but I have come to the practical observation that Trump is the one politician that is saying what needs to be said to the Liberal agenda: "no". He is the only one that will not cave. On face book, a relative accused me of making excuses for Trump's bad behavior. I told her that I wasn't making excuses as making excuses implied wrong doing and I don't think Trump is doing anything wrong in his fight for the rest of us that is not Black, not anti-religion, not a member of a whole bunch of victim groups. That he gets that we count too.

I don't know if it's too little too late, but I have come to the conclusion that we must confront every liberal twist and lie. We need to stop being so accommodating. They count on our being too busy and too nice to push back. And before you go on about the GOP and how they've let us down; I agree. But are their feet going to be held to the fire? Will they lose their seat next term? See, a large part of me don't want a bunch of people following party lines and marching to the orders of talk show hosts and pundits. I relish in the ability of the right to disagree and think for themselves unlike the Left who leaves no room for diversity of thought. But we need to get our act together and let those who would put themselves in the limelight know that NOW is the time to put the one thing in our principles that has been missing from conservatives for a long time: LOYALTY. Ok, they don't like Trump; they may NEVER like him, but he is the person standing between the Liberal destruction and the survival of this nation. It's time to stand behind our president as he defends America from enemies without and WITHIN.

  7. Jim Bird  •  Aug 5, 2017 at 1:07 am

No, no Jim, you're not supposed to agree with me…you're supposed to make me feel better 🙂 Tell me, go ahead and lie, that the Liberals will see how they are hurting America and stop…that they will grow up and accept that Trump won already…that the GOP Congress will limit Mueller's over reach…that conservatives will finally be offended and liberals have to accommodate them. Sigh. Ok, done dreaming.
