A shocking new survey highlights a growing threat to our First Amendment liberties. In a poll of 1,004 respondents, the Campaign for Free Speech found a majority of Americans who want to “rewrite the First Amendment to reflect the cultural norms of today.”
Among Millennials in particular, nearly 60 percent say the Constitution goes too far in allowing “hate speech” and 54 percent want violators to face jail time. Among respondents of all-ages, nearly 60 percent want government action against publications and media outlets for content that is “biased, inflammatory, or false,” with nearly half of those favoring jail time. Clear majorities are emerging who illogically, perilously, trust the heavy hand of government to control what we say, or limit the news we choose to consume.
Legitimate concerns about “hate speech” or “media bias” demand more alternatives in open public discourse, not tighter, oppressive government regulation.
