Not as Fragmented as Pessimists Presume

A major study from the Pew Research Center should reassure those of us who worry about the fragmentation of America based on race and ethnicity. Among the 43 million U.S. adults with Hispanic ancestry, a full 5 million don’t identify themselves as “Hispanic” or “Latino” at all.

Moreover, among families who’ve lived in the United States four generations or more—in other words, those with parents and grand-grandparents who are American born—Hispanic identification is only fifty-fifty. This means Latinos follow the familiar pattern of other immigrant groups, like the Irish or Italians, who de-emphasize ethnic identity after several generations in the U.S.

This contrasts with patterns of racial identity, where the great majority of African-Americans still describe themselves as black, even after several centuries in the U.S. Heavy intermarriage plays a big part in the increasingly rapid assimilation of Hispanics: among married third generation Latinos, the big majority—nearly two-thirds, in fact—have a non-Latino spouse.

Perhaps we’re not as fragmented as the pessimists presume.

With all respect to Michael and his sources, I ventured to my local mall yesterday, a rare occasion. What did
I see? The majority of the patrons were Moslem women in full regalia and Hispanics. Also, in stores such as
Sears, all the signs were in Spanish. It did not look like or sound like America. WIth me ,it is not skin color, but
culture. Call me what you will. Sandy.

I just moved away from one of the biggest cities in the country. I was born there and always thought I would live there. But it isn't even like living in the United States anymore. There is about a 50% chance that if you hear somebody speaking on the street that they are not speaking English. The vast majority of foreign language speakers are spanish speaking although there are a lot of chinese, indian and arabic speakers too. At least 10% of the residents are illegals, but I think it is more like 25%. It is ridiculous. We aren't assimilating immigrants. Immigrants are assimilating us. Both political parties have sold us out. And George W. Bush, whom I always supported, wonders how Trump got elected. George, it is because of YOU that we have trump.
