Palestinians Prefer Israel

East Jerusalem

While America, the European Union, and the UN give lip service to the notion of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, no one bothers to ask Palestinian residents of the Holy City what they themselves prefer. A little-noted but significant survey from the respected firm Pechter Middle East Polls found that only 30 percent of East Jerusalem’s 280,000 Palestinians would prefer to live in a new nation of Palestine in the event of a two state solution, while a full 35 percent would choose to live in Israel.

Moreover, the survey showed 40 percent of Palestinians saying they’d want to move to Israel if their neighborhood became part of Palestine. These startling numbers show why a peace settlement has proven so elusive: among the biggest concentration of Palestinians in the world, a plurality prefers Israeli citizenship.

Again, we see the distance between the people and their, largely self-appointed (usually through violently seizing “leadership”) leaders. In the years I lived in Israel (1982-1989), I knew many Arabs who got along fine with their Jewish neighbors (as we did with them) while they lived in fear of reprisals from the radicals within for that very same cooperation with Jews.
Who in their right mind, and most of these unfortunate people, in spite of the constant brainwashing they experience, are in their right minds, would chose a fascist dictatorship in which they’re nominally “the majority” to a democratic, right-and-responsibility-based democracy, even if they’re a minority.
The American experience is based on the successful integration of wave after wave of minorities. Likewise, so is the Israeli experience. I have no doubt that removing the threat of violence, Arabs would be easily integrated into Israel.
