In President Trump’s first six months, illegal immigration dropped dramatically, reaching its lowest point in at least 16 years—despite the fact that the administration hasn’t built its border wall, or conducted mass deportations that many feared, or enforced the promised Muslim ban.

At the same time, the stock market boomed to record highs, wages rose sharply (particularly for low-salary workers) and unemployment remains historically low—even with scant legislative progress on health care reform or taxes.

Why has the Trump presidency seemed to succeed for ordinary Americans while political insiders lament the absence of Congressional victories?

In part, that’s due to unequivocal messaging: the president’s outspoken opposition to illegal immigration discouraged unauthorized border crossings, while talking up deregulation and tax cuts has encouraged business investment and new hiring. It’s true that good intentions may count for little, but strong, clear messages from the bully pulpit of the presidency can sometimes change the world.

Why have ordinary Americans succeeded while having setbacks in congress? THE answer is not in your last paragraph. THE ANSWER IS the last 8 years of totalitarian rule by the so-called Democratic Party. Unfortunately The Swamp (on both sides of the aisle) are unwilling to give up rule. Thank God we have a President who's a human being with guts who loves our country and its people instead of a bunch of thugs and cowards whose personal interests come first. Of course, you and Lannie Davis seem to have it all figured out "…. in order to avoid a constitutional crisis by firing Muller, someone has to explain to Pence he's supposed to keep Trump in line. Pence used to be well respected in congress but now is looking ……" – on and on, chuckling about he's starting to look more like a moron. Davis has given legal advice to the Clinton's for decades on how to stay out of prison. He's especially adept on legal advise for "bleach-bitting servers and sealing Benghazi records for 50 years. THE PEOPLE ARE SICK OF THE DC SWAMP – THE INCREDIBLE ARROGANCE OF CONGRESS WITH ITS EVER SPIRALING OUT OF CONTROL ACTIONS DOWN THE RAT HOLE OF SOCIALISM/MARXISM. Go ahead though with your handwringing political double talk. After all, you guys are soooooo much more intelligent than those who work, build and maintain a free country that feeds the world with food, technology, protection from totalitarians and mountains of tax dollars THAT IS NEVER ENOUGH. The Clinton's cashed in billions of "foundation" pay-for-play laundered-through-terrorist-countries tax dollars. The Obamas will best that by a factor of ten. And I'm supposed to sit here and pretend none of this is true? It's insulting and disgusting to infer that the people who elected Trump are too stupid to not witness a world gone rogue and it being the policies of the last administration as its cause.

"totalitarian rule"? The USA has never (fortunately) seen anything like totalitarian rule and (hopefully) never will. You don't like ex-Presidents Obama and Clinton. I don't like current President Trump. The fact that we can freely say that on the internet or in the street without being arrested is proof the USA don't have totalitarian rule.

    • Nani Tavares  •  Jul 26, 2017 at 11:52 pm

Jim, I FEEL your frustration and while I get why Trump has turned on Sessions, I want to throw out one thing out that I feel we need to be aware of constantly as we push back. We cannot accomplish anything unless we stand together. Liberals have for many decades used the mob mentality to bully people into accepting their version of what is right, fair, equal. We cannot stop them if we begin eating our own. This is what I have preached for years on this site. I've been reading a book about Liberal bullies and one line really sums it up: liberals are so used to attacking that they don't know how to handle push back; when they have to play defense. WE NEED TO MAKE THEM PLAY DEFENSE. I am not saying we need to blindly support Republicans as the liberals do Democrats. I am saying we can hold Republicans who claimed for 8 years to see the damage that Obamacare is causing and is now doing little to dismantle it accountable, but do it in such a way that liberals understand that we WILL close ranks if they attack one of us.

Honestly, did we really believe that politicians would act like public servants? We know that there is going to be a lot of bending and caving in; that is what conservatives do and what Liberals count on us doing. What we need to let them know is what we do with foolish, weak members of "our family" who put being liked above family is OUR business. We confront them and let them know that it will not be accepted or tolerated and that the people they should fear is us. BUT and here is the big BUT, we also must be willing and ready to jump on anyone outside the family if they attack one of ours. WE can insult and be angry with one of our own but don't anyone even think of doing likewise!

It is in numbers that we will win. You, Rizzo and I may be able to stand up to them but many cannot. We need conservatives to know that they will no longer feel that they are fighting alone.

Again, I am not saying that conservatives do not have a right to complain about Republicans in Congress, I am just putting out the reminder that they are OURS to criticize and Liberals will find a fight if they try to attack one of ours; we CAN hit back and harder than they dreamed.

I'm 23 years old, I voted for Trump and disowned by my "loving tolerant liberal family" for doing so. I suppose being at Columbia for the second half of Obama's presidency did me inn, not only did that man grab the executive order pen 50 times a week then absurdly say the republicans aren't cooperating at all, he absolutely destroyed an already ailing economy with spending on more government, more freebies and for ALL this talk about evil wall street not a single thieving banker so much as went to trial for ANYTHING. If you were white you should be ashamed, the police were slammed and if for no other reason he was just a liar to the point that even politicians were blushing. History will show him as a true communist I think. And the media never EVER challenged him or was tough with him. I voted for Trump because America is great and I'm not ashamed to be white and I don't think it's racist to expect people to come into another country legally and I am not owed anything by anybody so why should anybody else be?

      • Nani Tavares  •  Jul 29, 2017 at 3:06 pm

Toby, that's the way to go. ASK questions. Don't accept anyone's view points and definitions as sacrosanct. Trust as God and/or our founders did, in YOUR ability to think and conclude on your own. That is where your individuality lies. Also remember that no one is perfect. Accept that sometimes your conclusions can be wrong and will evolve as you grow older and experience more. And know that you are not alone in your love for this country and in your efforts to fight for her.

  2. Jim Bird  •  Jul 27, 2017 at 11:17 am

    Nani,
I agree with your assessment but you and Bill should live in California for a couple of days. California is a 50/50 Dems/Repubs registered voters state but has a legislature that is 75% Liberal Dems. Your states are next. The Federal Government funds several thousand ACORN-type groups, especially George Soros' 50 govt funded groups and others like Black Lives Matter – all of these "professional agitator" groups are Democrats. The Federal Govt is an entrenched Democrat monarchy that was dethroned by Donald Trump. The people hate both parties, THE SWAMP, and they overthrew the Queen. Trump found a way to explain to both sides of the aisle how corrupt the SWAMP is, how to fix it and is following through on his promises 100% – wow, imagine that, an honest politician. And Bill, that's totalitarian rule. It starts with Liberals promising the Utopian dream of free everything and then, after the elections blaming their lies on Republicans for killing your dreams and your kids and your grandparents and minorities. And what do Republican politicians say? Wringing their hands, "Oh we are sooo sorry, how can we help to fix ourselves, we didn't realize we are so mean, let's not repeal BOcare-let's fix it ." Republican voters will just abandon the Party if they overthrow the Trump presidency and follow him wherever he goes. Trump knows what he's doing and tells us on a daily basis what is on his agenda and who's blocking it. The Republican blockheads are too arrogant to understand THEY ARE THE ONES that are destroying the Republic.

    • Nani Tavares  •  Jul 27, 2017 at 1:29 pm

Jim, agree. And I don't have to move to California to get it; I live in the state that is so liberal, we were the only one of four to vote for Carter in 1980! One of the things conservatives would love to see is Democrats stop moving to the Hard Left because it leaves little for the rest of us to work with. Yet we want moderate conservatives to move Hard Right and any that don't are called RINOS. Somewhere along the line, we have got to find some common ground of conservative values that we can stand on because if we don't stick together, the mob liberal WILL continue to bully and ultimately destroy us. I believe as you do, conservatives need to fight; I am just cautioning that we keep our eye on the real opponents.

        Nani,
        Concur!

  3. Ty  •  Jul 27, 2017 at 6:34 pm

I can buy Trumps rhetoric toward illegals and the increased enforcement (not just talk) and expansion of the list of people deported (including the Mexican husband of a female Trump supporter.. OOPS ! She must have thought it would only be those OTHER people and not HER illegal husband who had his own business and was productive and charitable – now she knows the right does not care, illegal = no different from a common street thug to those people, not human beings, throw away refuse), but his "talking up tax cuts and deregulation" caused new hiring and business investment?

Please. When brownback actually CUT taxes, Kansas performed WORSE than their neighbors and for the first time in years had massive budget deficits. Conservatives, I know you have these RELIGIOUS beliefs of the INERRANT cause and effect of tax cuts and regulations being THE SUM TOTAL of what affects an economy, but they are not. Everything is always reduced to that.

Trump has presided over job growth and other improvements in the economy for the same reason Obama did, larger structural issues with the US economy that have NOTHING to do with the president. Low but sustained growth has helped tighten up some labor markets, even on the lower end, that can help to boost wages slightly as demand for labor has slight increases. Nothing massive though and there are still larger structural issues with most modern economies that we need to grapple with on the horizon.

Now I will link something SCARY, this is going to be tough for many of you conservatives so I wanted to warn you because you saw and clicked on the link. I want to give you a chance to skip it to preserve the safety of your fragile and delicate minds, don't want to burst any conservative bubbles. This is an article on VOX (cue the movie screams) On larger worries and concerns over what capitalism is producing, AI and its effects on jobs.

    https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/7/25/15998002/capitalism-socialism-peter-thiel-wall-street-eric-weinstein

To those who are too weak to read that, shield your eyes or you'll turn to salt. For the rest, open your damn eyes to a possibility that more than just tax rates and regulations go into the nature of the economy.

    • Jim Bird  •  Jul 27, 2017 at 8:01 pm

      Ty,
Seriously Ty, and nothing personal here because you seem to be very young, but I did not understand anything you were getting at in your first paragraph. You're talking about one person and we're talking about our country.
      Regards,

      • Nani Tavares  •  Jul 27, 2017 at 10:19 pm

Jim, you made me smile as I was thinking the same thing about Ty. He hasn't twigged yet that the liberal utopia has been tried and hasn't worked. The government run programs are badly handled and impossibly funded. Now either he hasn't yet become part of the taxed working class or has family members on the dole who believe they are entitled just for breathing.

For years liberals have played at our "goodness" heart strings and are appalled that we have become "heartless" and "selfish". What has actually happened is that many of us have awoken to the realization that there is a HUGE difference between helping and enabling. If we continue to do the latter, we are not doing the former.

"Mom and Dad" has closed the purse string and kicked the "kids" out; time for them to earn their own way.

  4. Jim Bird  •  Jul 28, 2017 at 4:08 am

What do ya know, Obamacare is here to stay! Hooray, Thank you so much republican senators for saving our lives with free healthcare! Now on to tax reform. How bout 75% across the board except for evil corporations. Let's see, let's make it 88% for them because they are so rich, and of course racist! Yay!
Unfortunately senators you should probably stay in DC during your recess time, not to "work" of course, but because your constituencies back home (whether you voted yes or no) no longer want you around or see your faces anymore. They don't want to speak with you at a townhall meeting or have you kissing or touching their babies.
You and the Republican Party are irrelevant now; we zero interest in you. The Party is dead now for lack of interest you lieing ignorant a-holes.
The last Oval Office Occupant was a Marxist who destroyed the greatest healthcare the Earth has ever known and a hundred other atrocities that everyone knows about. Trump is honest, never lies, works his ass off (no one else in DC does) and yet you hate his guts and want to overthrow his Presidency because he wants to drain the swamp. You morons are the swamp and you literally think you're smart and doing a bang-up job for your districts back home. They know you're fools and cowards and accept bribes and they have one last message you, our middle finger.
I hope all of you lose your jobs in 18 months you disgusting mf'ers. You guys killed the Party and you killed the country and you could care less. Please don't go on TV or radio again for the thousandth time to explain why you f___ed up this time. Do your former voting base a big favor – resign. I hope Trump resigns and starts his own Party. So, one last time, all of you lieing ignorant pieces of crap, go to Hell for destroying our Republic .

    • Rizzo  •  Jul 28, 2017 at 2:04 pm

      Jim

You can look squarely at, and BLAME the 5 or 6 senators who voted for repeal in 2015 and have now voted against it in 2017.
They have totally BETRAYED their voters and have BETRAYED AMERICA.

I hold them in higher contempt than Barrack, Chuckie Schumar, and even Bernie "the Red".
At least they are honest about their intentions to destroy America.

    • Nani Tavares  •  Jul 28, 2017 at 3:03 pm

Absolutely agree with the anger, but I was NOT in favor of Obamacare lite (skinny health care) and am glad we are not saddled with that excuse for reform. I want the whole Obamacare dumped. I still don't get why people expect the government to take care of such a huge part of our lives and somehow succeed when every social program has failed. You better believe that I am upset that the GOP didn't have something ready to replace Obamacare but I will not put the blame solely on Republicans. Obamacare was set up so sneakily. Remember the pass it to find out what was in it? And each and every person KNEW that once you make people believe they have a RIGHT to something, it is near impossible to take it back. After MILLIONS screamed about higher premiums and deductions, Liberals drowned their pleas with concern about the poor; as though no one else counted.

So yeah, be angry at the Republicans but lets not forget who got us here. Obama and the Dems. For decades they have pushed us toward hate, intolerance, class warfare. We are not going to dismantle everything in 6 months or even a term or two. And we are certainly not going to win unless we remember who threw the first, second and on and on punch. Focus like a laser beam on the Left. By all means let Republicans know what it is you want, LISTEN to what can and cannot be done (not the political rah rah talking points), and then replace them if need be.

But NEVER allow the Liberals to dine on the corpse of those who let us down. They are the buzzards and we must remember that.

      • Rizzo  •  Jul 28, 2017 at 3:59 pm

        Nani

I agree… however, a handful of "Republicans" threw away an opportunity to take a HUGE step toward FREEDOM. 6 or 7 of them rejected that opportunity.
They passed an identical repeal bill in 2015, and there is NO EXCUSE for their failure to pass it again in 2017.
The only difference is, they now have a president that would have signed it into law.
Which means to me, they NEVER supported repeal. We need elected politicians who will do what they say they are going to do… anything less, is unacceptable deception.

      • Nani Tavares  •  Jul 28, 2017 at 5:49 pm

Rizzo, oh absolutely! They weren't serious about repealing Obamacare and should be replaced. We just need to remember how we got here.

By the way, can someone explain to me exactly who benefits from Obamacare? I mean the poor had Medicaid. The elderly Medicare. The healthy didn't need it and most working people had it thru their employer. And why is it that millions did not die or whatever dire thing that is supposed to happen if we get rid of Obamacare BEFORE there was an Obamacare? When they speak of affordable health care, who is getting affordable that they couldn't afford before?

Really this is such a con and Liberals need to keep answering for it.

      • Rizzo  •  Jul 28, 2017 at 6:34 pm

Nani… You're absolutely correct. However, the biggest problem is, logic, facts and wisdom didn't cause this problem, and as such, your utilization of such things won't get rid of this.
You can't talk somebody like Ty out of this, using logic, facts and wisdom… This is a belief system for him and his ilk. It is no coincidence that Ty is a self-proclaimed atheist. His lack of a faith leaves him with an empty hole in his life… A hole, that is now filled with government. Government is his God, his savior, his purpose in life.
It's sad and pathetic, but understandable.

      • Nani Tavares  •  Jul 28, 2017 at 8:35 pm

Ty lost all credibility when he admitted the Liberal belief that America is not great. I am not trying to convince him of anything; as I said I fear he is logically immature to get it. My efforts are for those unable to stand up to the liberals who has bullied a whole generation with their twisted definition of fairness. They need to keep asking questions and feel confident in their ability to think and figure things out for themselves. This can only happen if they witness our own refusal to buckle to the mob mentality of the Left. As I said, be angry, work to replace Republicans you feel should be replaced. Just remember who the real opponent is.

    • Gary L Liniger  •  Jul 29, 2017 at 5:37 pm

Jim: Why would Trump resign? ROFLMAO!

  5. Rizzo  •  Jul 28, 2017 at 2:07 pm

Even Ty would have to oppose this… he has expressed that our elected officials are to reflect and represent the will of the people.
These Republicans ran on Repeal. They were elected for the purposes of Repeal… and now they have BETRAYED THEIR VOTERS.

    • Ty  •  Jul 28, 2017 at 5:40 pm

      Go McCain !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      : )

The sense of joy welling up inside me is about to burst! A blow has been dealt to the Cruz wing, and how sweet a victory that is. However fleeting it may be, I intend to savor this. My only regret is I do not have the power to snap my fingers and have planes write Obama care is here to stay in the skies above every Cruz supporter in this nation.

  6. Rizzo  •  Jul 28, 2017 at 6:36 pm

Yay McCain, you are helping Ty destroy America…. and he couldn't be happier!

    • Ty  •  Jul 29, 2017 at 4:13 am

Just for that It's time to post some medicine and perspective. TYT on the McCain vote!

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiQywGl45Zw

Who knew after all these years, the only republican I've ever voted for, McCain in 2008, would come through so many years later.

      • Rizzo  •  Jul 29, 2017 at 7:34 am

And that tells you everything you need to know about John McCain.

  7. Truth hurts  •  Jul 29, 2017 at 3:04 am

Any success in the economy is because of Obama. Trump hasn't had enough time in office to change the course the economy was heading.

    • Jim Bird  •  Jul 31, 2017 at 10:36 am

Using the words "Obama" and "success" in the same sentence hurts truth.

    • Stan S.  •  Aug 14, 2017 at 2:12 pm

Actually, that's not correct, "Truth". I believe you'll find that several economic indicators were directly and virtually immediately affected by Trump's policies. In particular, the employment numbers as tens of thousands of jobs began returning to America. I don't particularly agree with the strong-arm tactics he used in some of these instances, but you can't argue the very real effect they had on these numbers.

Even more important, however, is the economic boost he has created by instilling greater confidence (yes, there are stats for these seemingly subjective things) in the economy and an overall sense of optimism. (There's a stat for that, too).

Obama's policies sucked so bad that the mere suggestion by Trump that regs will be reduced led to much of this positive sentiment. And, in fact, he's done more than suggesting it at this point. He's reduced them (regs) in a meaningful, substantial way.

All Trump had to do was get the hell out of the way. The power of Capitalism and the American economy is self-evident. You don't have to be a genius to improve it from where Obama left it.

  8. Rizzo  •  Jul 29, 2017 at 12:32 pm

Obviously, Ty loves McCain's vote. He really respects when our elected politicians lie to their constituents. He doesn't believe in a representative republic.
Obama lied to get Obamacare passed, and John McCain lied to get re-elected
Socialists have NO PRINCIPLES… It's by any means necessary, and the ends always justify the means.
    PATHETIC!

    • Ty  •  Jul 30, 2017 at 12:33 am

All you have cleared up is that large chunks of the right have no effing clue what socialism means, or what constitutes a socialist society. Keep using the term, keep failing to read a basic definition.

      https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/socialism

Note, the definition of socialism is NOT defined as "crap conservatives don't like"

And I fully expect you to keep LYING about it's meaning.

      • Rizzo  •  Jul 30, 2017 at 6:50 am

If you can't admit that "single-payer" is SOCIALISM, promoted by SOCIALISTS, then YOU ARE THE LIAR.
And that's what this GREAT BIG LIE OF OBAMACARE HAS BEEN ABOUT SINCE THE BEGINING…. Obamacare was designed to fail. You can blame Republicans for sabotaging Obamacare, undermining it, and whatever… but, Obamacare is doing EXACTLY what you socialists/leftists want, and that is failing and setting the stage for SINGLE-PAYER, which has been the Utopian-Dream for 100 years or more.

Now go away, you damn fraud of human!

  9. Nani Tavares  •  Jul 30, 2017 at 4:51 am

Here they come again; another Liberal bullying that we are supposed to just accept at face value.

A couple of days ago, Trump mentioned the possibility of banning Transgenders from the military. The Left went nuts. All of a sudden the military are heroes that "deserve" sex change operations. These are the same people who turn their noses at the wounded warriors badly in need of prosthetics and equipment. None of them are calling for petitions to make the government pay what is owed to these service men and women who fought and bled for this nation. They have brought out the "race card", claiming that eons ago, Blacks were not allowed to serve. And the gender card, pointing out that women are allowed to serve even though a pregnancy can and does cost the military more money.

The problem is that the military is NOT a democracy. It isn't even politically correct as fat people, high school drop outs and flat footed people cannot serve. A woman cannot demand a breast implant because she is flat chested and having implants would make her feel better. And, this is the most important point about the military: it's VOLUNTARY. What soldier tries to stand there demanding that the military change? And the good part about it being voluntary is that, like the rest of the society, if you don't like the benefits and pay of a job, you can leave and find one that you do like.

And before anyone pulls the "unfairness" card, what, I want to know, is so fair about treating a group of people special? If the end goal is EQUALITY, why does it always begin with preferential treatment?

Here is the hard fact: no matter how one feels, if you were born a male, you have a Y chromosome. No believing, feeling otherwise is going to make that Y chromosome disappear. The same with a female, nothing will make a Y chromosome appear. You have every right in this country to feel and believe what you want. What you do not have is the right to make me share in your pretense. Sorry.

I cannot in good conscience support a sex change operation to make you feel better about yourself any more than I can support a breast implant for a flat chested female soldier no matter how wonderful she performs her job. Not while there are thousands of wounded warriors in need. Liberals find it very hard to get this one basic point. Money isn't limitless. Adults get that there always need to be choices made and it's time we made them in favor of those in true need.

  10. Rizzo  •  Jul 30, 2017 at 8:15 am

Single-Payer = Leftists/Socialist Dream = Yet another mismanaged, soon to be bankrupt, slush-fund for greedy politicians.

Examples: VA, Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security.

    Examples to the contrary: ??????????????

Reasons for faith in government's ability to solve every problem: ???????????

Once the leftists totally destroy our healthcare system, where will all the Canadians go?
Their medical tourism industry will have to find a new (GOOD AND EFFECTIVE) place to go… if any such place will still exist?!?

    • Ty  •  Jul 30, 2017 at 12:38 pm

Oh we have medical tourism here in the US to, by US citizens. Here is an example of a guy who traveled to prison to get some healthcare.

      http://abcnews.go.com/Health/Wellness/nc-man-allegedly-robs-bank-health-care-jail/story?id=13887040

What a lovely system. Not sure why he did not try to get medicaid, maybe in North Carolina there was not a place nearby to go or some other issue. Either way, enjoy the free for all, this is what you tolerate, this is what you have no interest on improving.
