With an increase in strength in both houses of Congress Republicans must now use that new power to change the direction of the country. Blocking the president’s progressive agenda is important but it’s not nearly enough: conservatives must fight for constructive reform, not continued stalemate.
With that in mind, Congressional leaders should strike within days to announce a small number of bold, attainable goals and promise to bring then to floor votes in both House and Senate within 90 days. This echoes the historic and effective approach of Newt Gingrich and his “Contract with America” crew back in 1994, but that effort included ten items – far too many to keep the public focused.
I would recommend four goals this time, and devote all available energy to framing and pursuing them. Potential aims should include:
