Shady Operations Hurt Conservative Cause

164418086 (1)

Dr. Ben Carson has inspired millions with his idealism and common sense, but those of us who respect him most should shun dubious operators who are raising big money for the Draft Ben Carson for President Committee.

Dr. Carson insists he has no plans to run for office and no connection to those who solicit unauthorized funds in his name. This situation illustrates the shabby side of conservative activism: manipulative fundraisers who fill their coffers with irrational, exploitative appeals to well-meaning patriots.

Various organizations got rich through groundless agitation about Obama’s birth certificate and a new group collected $4 million in a pointless, hopeless push for impeachment. If we want government to spend more responsibly we should take similar care before investing our own funds in misleading efforts that only damage the conservative cause.

    Michael
Thanks for the column on bogus conservative causes.
Heard it on the Patriot in the Detroit Market.
My elderly mother gets 50 pieces of mail a day from all kinds of real and fake organizations and writes checks to many of them.
There are a few legit ones like wounded warriors that she gives to, but the overwhelming majority are not and she does not believe me.
Hopefully by showing her your column I can convince her.
    Thanks again

I agree that there are a lot of shady operators raising money for dubious causes, especially in conservative politics, but why you chose National Draft Ben Carson as your example, I will never understand.

Dr. Carson has said that he never planned to run for President but that he wouldn’t rule it out, which is MUCH MORE than anyone who already knows they’re going to run for President in 2016 has said thus far (I.E. Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, etc.). So yeah, that’s to be expected. It’s part of the game, and someone as “knowledgeable” as you in politics should know better.

Your article pointing the finger at the Draft Ben Carson campaign has me, and many others, questioning your motives in producing this article. You are an example of another “shabby” side of conservative politics: protecting the “R” at all costs. “Republican” does NOT equal conservative. Thanks to this article, I’m going to place you on that long list of not-so-conservative Republicans hell-bent on protecting the status quo and the big “R” that helps line your pockets with cash.

    Cheers.

Medved has no clue what conservatism is.

Michael, what is shady about the RunBeRun.org effort to get Dr. Ben Carson to run for US President? It sounds like you have not bothered to visit our web site because I don’t think you could characterize us as ‘shady’ if you had.

Do you have something against free speech and almost 400,000 people signing an online petition or over 7,000 volunteers working together, or over 65,000 donors pooling their resources to create the ‘clamor’ that Dr.Ben has consistently said he would respond to? I note that you do not support your assertion above that “Dr. Carson insists he has no plans to run for office” with a link to a published report – because in every such quote, there is always a disclaimer like ‘at this time’ or similar.

Dr. Carson has won many recent straw polls and just came in #3 in the recent RNC straw poll. The support to get Dr.Ben to run for US President is entirely organic and energetic.

I’m really puzzled how you can characterize our effort as ‘shady’ when it’s being led by people like John Phillps Sousa IV and Vernon Robinson (three-time Congressional candidate in NC) whose photos and personal contact information appear on our web site. We respond to every contact with our Draft campaign within 24 hours (and that’s a big job, taking over 20 volunteers to manage!).

I’d like to arrange for you to have a chat with Vernon Robinson, our National Director, on or off the air. I think you would conclude that the Draft Dr. Ben Committee is performing a signal public service by facilitating hundreds of thousands of people to speak out together to convince Dr. Ben that he’s being called to service of his country – something he has always said he would respond to.

Is collective free speech only allowed if the RNC or pundits like you ‘license’ it?

    Kindest Regards,

    Ron Robinson
    Digital Director

    Dear Michael,

RunBenRun.org is a real movement where many volunteers like myself are working trying to convince Dr. Carson to run for President. There is nothing shady about a movement that wants the next republican candidate to be chosen by the people rather than by the GOP establishment. This should be an example of civic duty and real republicanism. The sponsor of the movement is well known and there are no secrets here. I think that as a journalist you should have done more research before pontificating. You are still on time for that, as well as for an apology to the thousands of our supporters that may have been hurt with your comments.

    Regards,
    Sebastian

Medved, you said “Dr. Ben Carson has inspired millions with his idealism and common sense”. I wish you were one of them instead of trying to discourage his supporters with your TOTALLY UNTRUE statement here that “Dr. Carson insists he has no plans to run for office”.

    Michael,
I suggest you check your facts before targeting a cause like the draft for Ben Carson to attack. It is, in fact, a legitimate cause and Dr. Carson has said on many occasions that if the American people continue to clamor for him to run, he will not turn his back on them. Although there are “organizations” who are sketchy, the National Draft for Dr. Ben Carson for President is not, I can assure you.
    Sincerely,
    Chris

Mr. Medved would do well to remember that there have been many unwilling candidates for the Presidency who made excellent presidents, starting with George Washington. I would have to say that Ben Carson is by far the greatest presidential hopeful this nation has at the moment, period, because he has not been previously involved in the cesspool of Washington, and truly will be the peoples candidate.

I would dearly love to see Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz defeated in November. So I had a contribution to a GOP opponent with a Jewish-sounding last name – anybody want to call ME a racist? Now, I’m getting daily appeals from everywhere, but the funny thing is, all the contribution envelopes go back to the same address in DC…so the only people I’ll donate to from now on are are those candidates endorsed by Dr. Ben Carson.

I honor a statesman who is willing to step up and state that He will not turn His back on His country or ALL THE CONCERNED CITIZENS OF OUR GREAT COUNTRY. I believe Dr. Carson to be the ONE PERSON WHO WILL UNITE OUR COUNTRY, PRESENT A WORKABLE HEALTH CARE BILL, WILL HONOR OUR MILITARY AND ENCOURAGE OUR CITIZENS TO BE ALL THEY CAN BE PLUS PROVIDE A WORKABLE AND EASY PLAN FOR OUR NON CITIZENS TO OBTAIN CITIZENSHIP IN AN HONORABLE WAY. DR. CARSON HAS HAD THE STRENGTH TO SPEAK UP ON ISSUES THAT ARE TAKING OUR COUNTRY DOWN BUT RESPECTING ALL PEOPLE WHILE DOING SO. LIKE I SAID, A TRUE STATESMAN AND WE NEED HIM AS PRESIDENT IN 2016.

Mr. Medved, your article really surprises me and makes me question your motives. Please reconsider a few of your comments:
Ben Carson has never “insisted” he wouldn’t run, but in fact has indicated he would, under the right circumstances.
Now what’s this about “unauthorized funds”? Run Ben Run is not Carson’s website, but is asking for donations from true conservatives which could help to get a groundswell of opinion going that might encourage Carson to run. Perhaps it’s a long-shot, but unusual times need unusual methods, and if reasonable, wise and God-fearing men do not get into public office soon, we may not have an America to come home to. A movement is needed and movements need funding. There is nothing irrational or shabby about that. The Republican Party has some good men in it, but has become nearly impotent. It’s time to look at a non-politician who will act decisively to turn America’s trajectory. Sir, America is dying. There MUST be real change.
As for the group that has organised for the “pointless and hopeless” impeachment push, it may well be hopeless, but is decidedly NOT pointless. It is an education for the public that is badly needed.
I hope you will acquaint yourself with the Run Ben Run website. There are some good, informative articles on it.

Michael, it is apparent that you did not exercise due diligence before writing this missive. Nor have you tried to reach out to the directors of RunBenRun, or you would realize this is a movement born out of a deep concern for our country, not some manipulative fundraiser with exploitative appeals. Do you consult with Karl Rove, or the RNC, to make pernicious unfounded accusations like these, that denigrate those of us in the trenches, trying to do what we can in some small way to change the direction of this country, or is it a result of living in a place where you are oblivious to a world beyond riches and fame, and self-aggrandizement? Your diatribe should be directed at those organizations like Rove’s that make drive through consultants rich, while having very little positive impact on the state of this nation. There are no taxpayer dollars being spent, and no mind-bending pressures employed, to encourage patriotic Americans to join this effort. We are still free to choose how to spend our time and money, but if we don’t elect righteous men/women, who believe in our Constitution, to be our servant leaders, we won’t be for long. There are many intelligent, well-informed individuals that do not have national forums to opine from, so we do what we can to be involved, to make a difference. If that is something that offends you, then opine on, but at least do so after you know the truth.
