Should the U.N. Decide America’s Elections?
In response to President Trump’s refusal to pre-emptively commit to a “peaceful transfer of power” if Biden wins the upcoming election, Democrats wallow in paranoid fantasies of a possible coup.
For instance, Peter Beinart in the New York Times says that if Trump declares himself the winner in a close race, the Democrats should appeal to a higher authority: the United Nations! He writes that we may need “foreign intervention against tyranny in our own land…In a disputed election, the US could benefit from international oversight.”
This is ridiculous, of course: why should Americans trust a corrupt international body, dominated by the likes of China, Russia and scores of dysfunctional dictatorships, rather than relying on our own Congress, state legislatures and courts? The idea of invoking foreign force to resolve a domestic dispute reflects a shameful contempt for America’s electorate and the sturdy institutions designed to reflect its will.
