The Myth of a “Minority-Majority” Future

The Census Bureau suggests that the population of blacks, Latinos, Asians and mixed-race Americans will soon combine to outnumber non-Hispanic whites, making America for the first time a minority-majority nation.

But two prominent sociologists–Herbert Gans and Richard Alba–recently argued that such predictions are probably wrong and any anxiety concerning the nation’s changing demographics is surely wrong-headed. For instance, heavy intermarriage rates among both Latinos and Asians won’t necessarily swell the non-white population, since many children of such mixed unions choose to identify as white, or simply as multi-ethnic Americans.

Already, half of Hispanics list their race as “white.” Prominent Latinos like Marco Rubio or Eva Longoria are no more “non-white” than children of Italian, Greek or Jewish immigrants of prior generations who were initially stigmatized as inescapably alien.

Affirming a unifying American identity won’t necessarily end cultural, economic or religious differences, but it should help move us past our insane over-emphasis on increasingly misleading characterizations by race.

I guess the Dems will stop their racist leftist, pandering and design some equally diabolical plan to divide the country.

I have no problem with classifying people that are mixed with white partially white, but I think the key is that many others do not consider white people that are mixed with something else as "pure" white.

The alt right / ethno nationalist crowd definitely sees mixed people as something to be avoided and they do NOT consider them white at all. They are a marginal group though and most conservatives, to their credit, recoil at these sorts of associations and definitions.

But while listening to that segment on air with Michael one sentiment struck me as odd. People that were mixed with asian and white or latino and white often considered themselves white, and others as well. But when there was a BLACK person mixed with white… it's like hold your horses mixed breed, you're black or at most, mixed, not white.

Sounds like a societal stratification of ethnic perceptions, is it just the more drastic skin shade difference that is the driver there? Who knows.

I do think it's still strange to call someone that is half asian and half white just "white" though. It's almost as if they others want to diminish the less common ethnic makeup or something, a call back to jews that would "Americanize" their names for fears that the locals would be turned off by jewish sounding names. That attitude thinks too little of people in the US… or at least of liberals !!!! I would call people mixed with asian and white "mixed," however they defined themselves. I consider myself mixed more than "black," since I'm mixed with black/korean/middle eastern.

So according to the article I would be considered part of the out group, while anyone mixed with white would be part of the white majority? Why would their totals not be added to the total of what they were mixed with? It's a strange way to cut of group identities, and seems like it does nothing but inflate the classification of whiteness.

You sure do have some bizarre ideas. I have never heard anybody, other than aryan-nation types on TV, talk about "pure white" and other similar things. And even the left-wing nutters at Southern Poverty Law Center state that there is only something like 5,000-10,000 of those people in the whole country. That is virtually non-existent. I'd bet the percentage of Americans who support communism is AT LEAST 1000x more than the percent who support white-supremacist ideas. Maybe you would be able to come to better conclusions if you weren't always obsessed with fringe groups that you only really even know about because the left has to create a non-existent boogey mean to scare minorities into voting democrat.

It is the mixed white and black people that generally choose to claim that they are black. It is not the other way around. Of course, they are neither white nor black. They are bi-racial.

Amen brutha! These leftist libs live in airtight bubbles… impenetrable to facts, logic and reason.

      • Ty  •  May 19, 2017 at 5:04 am

Oh I have plenty of other reasons to vote democrat than that. And I know the alt right ethno nationalists are a fringe group, I am not a dishonest liar about reality like so many conservatives are when they pretend groups like antifa are the center of mass of liberal ideology. The alt right became more of a curiosity to me since I found it interesting that the anti social justice youtube community I watch frequently seemed to have quite a few people talk with alt right people, and many of them seemed less hostile to that group than the social justice warriors. Their hatreds were telling to me, what you hate most is a window into ones priorities in life. Also, it's a fact that the alt right is more associated with the right. Is it a cheap shot to point out some of the maggots in the conservative pantheon? Yes, and I do it anyway as a sort of psychic retaliation for all the nonsense and misrepresentations I hear all the time about the left from the right.

      • Ty  •  May 19, 2017 at 5:17 am

Rizzo, this is an empirical question. Tell me, do you think more liberals listen to conservative talk radio (as a percentage, I know conservative talk radio is larger) or more conservatives listen to liberal talk radio? If you think the latter is non existent, not quite. I suspect there are a higher percentage of liberals listening to conservative partisans than the reverse, but I do not know. And don't you dare bring up outfits like CNN. Anderson Cooper / Wolf Blitzer are milquetoast liberals who try to play things straight, nowhere close to a partisan shill like Hannity. For a better comparison, use a group like the young turks, which are kind of a liberal version of conservative partisans on air.

Here is a useful sample that talks about the problem you think is a function of being on the left

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oCBS1FKQds

I am a liberal that listen to conservatives ALL the time. Medved is the least terrible conservative host, Prager used to be ok but he's become as much of a shill for Trump and reality as Hannity, completely insufferable.

But back to the topic at hand, I know conservative arguments, I am not some punk that just wandered in here unaware. Do you know my arguments? Part of the reason I like commenting here is because some of the things I hear coming out of conservatives mouths on talk radio suggest they NEVER had their ridiculous nonsense slapped out of their fool heads by a liberal. Sometimes you hear someone say something so dumb, you realize that unless they are genuinely mentally ill, the only way that trash idea could persist in their mind is if THEY lived in their own bubble of information and group think.

Talk like any government program under the sun = communism or socialism. So few of the conservative rubes actually think their statements through, conflate policies they dislike which economic systems that have no bearing on those policies. There is just too much low hanging fruit of nonsense being spouted from the mouths of conservatives to imagine they are digesting liberal ideas and arguments. And no, I do not mean pointing to some left loon shouting everything is racist every third syllable. Don't pick on the cripple to engage and defeat.

      • Rizzo  •  May 19, 2017 at 8:43 am

        Ty… Here's an empirical answer.

The only reason conservative talk-radio and Fox exists is because of the omnipresent nature of the leftist, liberal agenda promoted by almost ALL media outlets. Believe me, we are ALL very aware of the leftist, lunatic agenda. It is shoved down our throats CONSTANTLY and EVERYWHERE. It is impossible to escape.
So, to answer your question, YES, an infinitely larger amount of conservatives are exposed to liberal arguments than the reverse.
Your question/statement is more evidence to the complete blind-spot you have in your alternate reality.

    • Ty  •  May 19, 2017 at 2:16 pm

The reason most news outfits lean left is because the centers of power of media organizations is in the cities. Same for universities on average. It is not the fault of liberals that the places that tend to produce organizations that gather news and produce colleges and universities are cities and larger metro areas that are more liberal. If you do not like that, you can produce your own, but therein lies the rub. You have, and what you have produced is a concentrated ingot of conservative drivel, separate and apart from the larger society.

Because the natural inclination of conservatives is to be more tribal (individual before collective, family before town, town before state, state before nation, christian before secularists, etc etc), you have a tendency to wall yourselves off in those bubble worlds of information and narrative. That clip I linked, when there were stories breaking about Trump all over media and the internet that were negative, were like peering into an alternate universe. Fox News job, and conservative medias job, is not to analyze reality as it is, it is to protect republicans and conservatives and put a positive narrative on their agenda. And if that cannot be done, pretend it does not exist. THIS is the bubble YOU all have constructed for yourselves. And you seem quite content to live inside it, or at least too many conservatives do.

Like I've said before, much of talk radio and fox news and breitbart is like a warm blanket in that big scary world where not all perspectives are ultra conservative. It's COLD out there, so whatever comes from there is just FAKE, or part of some LIBERAL/LEFTIST plot.

Keep telling yourself that. The attitude of a child, how far conservatives have fallen. Buckleys son must be grateful his father did not live to see this descent into the gutter.

      • Rizzo  •  May 19, 2017 at 5:28 pm

Conservatives are more tribal? Hmmm…. I thought it was you liberals who cluster together and groupthink in big cities. It is, we Conservatives, who are spread out and must seek truth outside of pop-culture. It is, we, who must resist the contemporary lies and distortions…. much like the free-thinkers of old that challenged mainstream-accepted theories like the Ptolemaic system of astronomy and flat-earthers.

Stay in your tribal cities, insulate yourself from reality and continue to believe that because you own the levers of propaganda and false-education, that makes you right and correct.

      • Ty  •  May 20, 2017 at 3:59 am

Spare me. I know the kinds of conservative Pravda large chunks of republicans bathe themselves in, it was shown in that video and I hear quite a bit of it on talk radio.

The clearest example of this is the reaction to Trump himself. Conservatives like to pride themselves on taking responsibility for their own actions. Not making excuses, not being a "victim"

… have you all LISTENED to Trump? He is the single biggest crybaby we've EVER had in the white house. Michael talks about changing out the white house staff, that the staff is not serving Trump well, it reminds me of a bunch of people pointing out reasons a pig in a dress is not attracting mates. It's the dress, it's the eyeliner, it's the lipstick… No, it's the PIG !!!!!!!!!

It's Trump. HE is the one who makes STUPID/reckless decisions, sends his supplicants out to LIE and spin for him, then undercuts them on twitter or interviews the next DAY. HE did that. Not liberals, not the media, TRUMP!

And then he whines about the media, about how unfair people are being towards him, how about he be BETTER ! But no, he, and his fool supporters (medved and shapiro exempted – but NOT Hannity, NOT Tucker, NOT Dennis excuses Prager) keep running cover for this man. It's everyone else but Trump, it's everyone else that is being hysterical, he's done nothing wrong, or people are just overreacting, after they reacted WORSE to LESS from Hillary !!!!!!!

Hillarys email server was more secure than Trump mouth, directly feeding intel to Russian ambassadors, but never mind. Nothing to see here, what about those LIBERALS, what about the LEFT!

THIS is conservative media, this is the effects, this is what you want to soak up. A constant bath of reinforcement.

And the point is that this is NOT reality, this is a warped abomination of what reality is meant to be. Just how too many conservatives like it.

      • Rizzo  •  May 20, 2017 at 8:46 am

Who is it really that receives a "constant bath of reinforcement"?
Seriously, get real! Your leftis agenda is jammed down the throat of everyone, everywhere. It is as pervasive as anything EVER. This creates the dilusion that somehow, because of this, the leftist agenda is right and correct. I'm not saying American leftists are Nazis, but this is how the Nazi movement expanded.
Don't you find it the least bit confounding that 99% of all media is in total agreement with your leftist movement? Or are you just total unquestioning drone?

  3. Rizzo  •  May 17, 2017 at 8:26 pm

Dude… seriously, expand your knowledge, widen your world-view. Many Americans, not to mention most Conservatives don't fit into your narrow, cliche' of a caricature, alternate-reality.

    It's really sad and pathetic.

  4. AARON SCHULTZ  •  May 20, 2017 at 2:56 am

Pigmentation seems like a pretty silly criteria for prejudice. Why not shoe size, or penis length… Imagine the history of discrimination if we change the criteria to something other than pigmentation. It becomes a Monty Python episode…

    • Rizzo  •  May 20, 2017 at 8:48 am

Exactly, but it's a convenient and obvious way for the leftists to divide the country.
      The drones follow along.

  5. Verne Horsley  •  May 22, 2017 at 11:43 am

Why waste time discussing what people of mixed heritage consider themselves to be? Everyone can consider themselves to be whatever they choose; that's nobody's business but their's. We should all consider them to be just people.

  6. Steve Shafit  •  May 27, 2017 at 10:15 am

I truly velieve that once the people of this country stop seeing themselves by their ethnic background, and start seeing themselves as Americans, this country will not only be as great as the founding fathers dreamt of, but will surpass any imaginable greatness. Time to call ourselves Americans, not ethnic Americans.

    • Rizzo  •  May 28, 2017 at 8:47 am

      Amen Steve.
In the past, people came here because they wanted to be Americans. They wanted to speak English… and they joined a society that encouraged them to do so.
Today, it is the exact opposite. The leftists promote the theory of America as a salad-bowl rather than a melting pot. E pluribus unum… not the opposite.
