A WONDERful Example for Politicians

Among holiday season releases, the splendid new film WONDER has earned spectacular success—finishing second in pre-Thanksgiving box office, with enthusiastic reviews and an impressive $27 million in ticket sales.

The story follows a 10-year-old with facial birth defects, braving his first year of school with support of his loving parents, Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson. Behind the scenes, WONDER involved surprising collaboration between conservatives and progressives in Hollywood. Participant Media produced Al Gore’s global warming films and other left-leaning message movies, while Walden Media is best known for family-friendly fare that affirms traditional values, like the popular NARNIA series.

Despite different histories, these two companies managed to work together backing this new film—a cinematic gem that’s completely apolitical, while celebrating strong families, kindness and every-day decency. If left and right in Hollywood can get together behind the fundamental virtues the nation needs most, shouldn’t our representatives in Washington make every effort to follow their example?

Mr. Medved says: "If left and right in Hollywood can get together behind the fundamental virtues the nation needs most, shouldn't our representatives in Washington make every effort to follow their example?"

Common sense answer: No because left and right disagree on some fundamental values.

The left is very very upset about "income inequality." The right thinks there are far more important issues to worry about.

The right thinks that the government should protect innocent human life. The left fervently supports abortion rights pretty much without restriction.

The left was all up in arms about the fact that gay people couldn't get married. The right didn't see the government's failure to sanction gay marriage to be an issue that warranted changing the definition of marriage.

The right is worried about too much immigration and a failure of assimilation that damages our culture and national identity. The left believes that multiculturalism is what USA is all about and that our strength is our diversity.

I could go on, but I won't. There are good reasons for the massive division in this country. There are significant segments of the population with conflicting world views. The left and the right have some fundamentally different values as a result of these conflicting world views. I am always amazed when the left is completely outraged at some "injustice," and I just don't see any injustice at all. A movie that isn't even political doesn't have anything to do with the political divisions in this country.

Jack really nails it, when politicians and commentators like Micheal Medved talk of the need for "reaching across the aisle" we need to ask what that actually entails? if we need to compromise on the % decrease of business income taxes in order to move the tax code and rates in the right direction that is better than nothing (never mind the left and much of the Repubs have no interest in actually simplifying the tax code as that is a source of power and influence for them). But we have fundamental differences between right and left that are really not reconcilable. Either abortion is legal or it is not. Either we retain our 2nd amendment right to keep and bear arms or we lose it. This is not to say rights cannot have regulations but if you regulate a right out of existence in a practical sense (by making it virtually impossible and up to the whim of a bureaucrat to decide if you can possess a handgun on NY or DC) then you have effectively lost that right. It seems to me the right and the Republican party needs to start fighting as hard as the left has for decades to communicate their message of individual liberty, free market capitalism, religious liberty, etc. and stop fantasizing about getting along with the left, it will not work, we are losing and will continue to lose over the long run and continue our slow (and inevitable?) decline into another mediocre liberal big govt European type country will be the result, we will lose what made us unique in history (America as an "idea"). And I guarantee you if the the Democrats controlled the White House and both chamber of congress they would be making a lot more progress towards their agenda than the Repubs are. My only hope at this point is that the economy comes out of it's 8 year pathetic Obama era growth rate of below 2% and the populace responds to that. And that the left keeps over reaching and the rest of us decide we have had enough of "gender fluid", fake science, suppression of free speech, putting Christian bakers out of business, etc.

[The left is very very upset about "income inequality." The right thinks there are far more important issues to worry about.]

Correct. I am not bothered by income inequality in and of itself, but I have a preference that economic gains and increased prosperity lift ALL boats, not just the owners of capital. That is not happening to the same degree as it has in the past. The returns to capital are much higher than the returns to labor, and a lot of people are not equipped to participate in specialized labor fields.

    https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/73/US_productivity_and_real_wages.jpg

When I see charts like the above, it bothers me that productivity has increased but wages for large swaths of the country have been stagnant. This is not a case of people not working, it's a case of the economic returns to peoples work not being rewarded in the same way. And apparently, it's mostly liberals that give a damn, not the more indifferent conservative tribe who seems to give little to no concern about the well being of their fellow citizenry.

Wherever the chips fall, is how it is supposed to be, enough money to afford healthcare? Yes? Great. No? Not my problem.

[The right thinks that the government should protect innocent human life. The left fervently supports abortion rights pretty much without restriction.]

Some restrictions are tolerable, but mostly correct. And the reason is that most pro choice people do not consider a fetus and a 5 year old the same class of human. One is a human being that can think and feel and has a level of self awareness, the other, particularly in the early stages, is a cluster of cells, potential being, but not there yet, and the idea of conferring the SAME moral weight and status on such an entity as we would other human beings does not fly with us. But like I've said before, if you all get another supreme court pick, you can abolish roe v wade, and make abortion illegal again in many states, or go nuclear on general legislation with a republican congress and presidency and make it illegal across the country (I wonder if conservatives would dare?). And if conservatives truly believed that abortion is murder, that ending the life of a fetus is no different than ending the life of a 5 year old or a 20 year old, I fully expect murder charges to be brought up for any doctor or former mother that performs an abortion. Take those beliefs out to their natural conclusions, or gtfo and stop lying to me and yourselves. You either think there is no difference, or you secretly do find a difference. And if the answer is no, I want a good reason why you would be ok putting someone to death who murders someone with a gun and not a doctor/mother who performs an abortion and "murders" an "unborn child"

No difference? Ok, follow it through then. Don't get mad at me for calling you out on your own standards, own it.

[The left was all up in arms about the fact that gay people couldn't get married. The right didn't see the government's failure to sanction gay marriage to be an issue that warranted changing the definition of marriage.]

Correct. I explicitly wanted the government to give its blessing to gay marriages, because it would align with my conception of government endorsed marriages. Relationships that society sanctions. Gay relationships are basically supported and accepted by most of society, and it should be reflected in our marriage laws.

Conservatives wanted to pretend this was about preserving the sanctity of marriage, or that marriage was actually about child rearing, but that was all a lie. Conservatives had no problem with a heterosexual couple getting married that was sterile, their capacity to have biological children was NEVER the linchpin of their opposition. You know what was? They disapproved of gay relationships. Many still do, and the idea that government would give its blessing to what many of them find an ABOMINATION? Unconscionable. They can't stand that the culture has turned away from their preferences and values on gays, even before that the same people were arguing against gays serving openly in the military, that was not even a case of endorsement of gay relationships, it was active discrimination against gays by the government. But conservatives LIED about their motivations. Unit cohesion? Really? So if we replaced GAY with JEW, and the presence of KNOWN JEWS was thought to cause issues with unit cohesion, they would have been against that too? Please. They just disliked gay people and wanted their own bigoted standards to be ENFORCED by the federal government in a PUBLIC institution known as the military. And we finally took a baseball bat to those TRASH rules. This is why you need liberals, sluggish tortoise like conservatives have to be DRAGGED to modernity. We FORCED the issue to let gays serve openly, and we've yet to fall into the sea.

[The right is worried about too much immigration and a failure of assimilation that damages our culture and national identity. The left believes that multiculturalism is what USA is all about and that our strength is our diversity.]

On this I'm more mixed, I worry about too much immigration too, but on different grounds than many conservatives. My concern is almost entirely based on concerns over harm to the nation in terms of having a hostile ideology take hold. I'd be VERY wary of allowing millions of Islamic refugees into the US without slowing that down, because I'd want more screening to determine if people had what I considered incompatible values that were discordant with the larger culture.

Now my definition of what constitutes discord with the larger culture is probably more narrow than the typical conservative. For example, not voting conservative is not on my list of things to worry about, or not voting liberal. I also don't care about My "culture" and "way of life" being supplanted. That talk strikes me as little more than a bunch of frightened little delicate flowers who think too many people celebrating a quincinera is going to ruin America. And as you go deeper into right wing reactionary attitudes, the trends get darker and more ugly, veering into concerns over ethnicity and ethnic preservation. And almost a sense of impurities infecting the host nation. I don't care about any of that.

I do not care if hundreds of other cultures come to the US, so long as they buy into a larger common American culture that we still mostly share. Ideas around freedom of speech, freedom of religion and what to or not to worship. I have ZERO anxiety at seeing all sorts of non white/christian immigrants come to the US, but I think the right wing tribalists are MUCH more antagonistic to such things. Because so much of their appeal and power is derived from being part of that tribe, look at the demographics of who votes for who, especially white evangelicals. When it comes to immigration, the right is engaged in the greatest calculations of ZERO SUM GAME thinking around. You think that is a left wing affinity, get the right talking about how illegal immigration (and a lot of legal immigration) affects them. I do not share that fear and sense of loss or losing ground. I'm not white, or indian, or Latin American, but when I see people from those backgrounds in the US, I do not get a gut sense of the neighborhood going down. Go read the comments sections on a right wing website about illegal immigrants, you'd think ISIS fighters crossed the border the amount of HATRED and RAGE at these people you encounter from the christian party, god loves all mankind my @ss. I don't even want open borders and am fine with deportations if caught at the border, but I have ZERO contempt for such people, most of whom I see as basically trying to have a better life, but that is NOT the attitude of MANY people on the right, they HATE and despise those people. Go read them, ton't tell me it is not so, tell your fellow right wingers.

Your desires to kill babies, I won't cover, other than to remind people of how sick the left is…. You specifically Ty. You are sick. Go ahead, you Godless, soulless heathen… pull a fully formed baby out of a would-be mother. Rip it apart, scramble it's brains, then tell yourself, you are doing a good thing, and that it's not a human.
Someday, future societies will look back on YOU SICK PEOPLE with horror… the same horror that people view slavery and Hitler. Thinking, feeling, God-loving people, feel that way NOW.

"I explicitly wanted the government to give its blessing to gay marriages, because it would align with my conception of government endorsed marriages. Relationships that society sanctions."
      – Moron, society can sanction your gay relationships without redefining the term "marriage". It's very similar to other stupid leftist arguments on gender. You just want us all to deny reality in an effort to somehow appease your worldview. It's pathetic and dangerous. Men and women are fundamentally different, therefore the nature of their relationships are fundamentally different from same-sex relationships. Marriage, the institution, the name itself, is one way of acknowledging that inescapable truth.

Regarding, immigration, specifically, illegal immigration… It is out of control.
American culture is worth preserving… And it has NOTHING to do with the color of your skin, you pathetic HACK. If you claim to value AMERICAN CONCEPTS of "freedom of speech" and "freedom of religion", etc., then assimilation must happen.
Explain to us, people who come from countries with no experience in democracy, no ability to speak our language, how do you expect them to learn and embrace concepts like "freedom of speech" and "freedom of religion"?
America must be in total control of who enters our country. The purpose of immigration is for the benefit of US citizens and our shared society, not for the benefit of people around the world.
You leftists always have everything backwards. America is NOT great because of its diversity. It's because AMERICA is GREAT, that it is diverse. The greatness of America is desired by people of every color around the world. That is GREAT. But, you must come here legally. You must be equipped to contribute to this great country. Lastly, you better embrace the culture that created the greatest country in world-history, otherwise we are doomed to lose it forever.

Marriage is defined however we want to define it. That includes you, if you and other social conservatives don't want to consider gay marriage actual marriage, you go right ahead. Just know that the rest of us, and now our government, does not sign off on your standard and limited definition. I know that angers the social conservatives. Let that anger grow, and let it fuel that righteous fury as they go an elect Roy Child attraction Moore. I love that the same people most hostile to ILLEGAL immigrants, whining about the rule of LAW are backing a man who flouted the LAW and defied a court order to remove the ten commandments from the courthouse. Rule of law? Please, just a bunch of tribalists gone wild.

And the latest from the most tribal party of all?

        http://www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2017/11/donald-trumps-response-to-disaster-aid-for-california-nothing/

Governor Brown requested over 7 billion dollars in aide from the feds for disaster relief for the fires, along with every democratic representative, and senator, and with the exception of a single republican representative, the ENTIRE republican delegation from California boycotted the request for more funds, which were left out of the package that went to PLENTY of non democrat states.

Like I have said before, the essence of the core of conservatism, is ME and MINE. My tribe, MY people, Florida needs funds? Texas, ok, but California? with a bunch of liberals? Too expensive, not a PENNY more, screw them. Even most of the republicans that represent our own state.

Democrats did not deny states like kentucky coverage for obamacare, we were HAPPY to help expand medical coverage for plenty of rural areas that do not vote our way, because we are not vindictive little maggots of men like so many tribalist conservatives.

Michael, this is a large part of the reason there can be no armistice, not with "those people"

Look at how they behave. We are not compatible, they just need to be beaten and cast out.

      • Rizzo  •  Nov 22, 2017 at 6:43 pm

Our government can misrepresent what marriage means, and has always meant throughout human history. Just add that to the ever-growing list of things that government gets wrong. NOBODY that I know is "angered" by anything gays do. We are just frustrated by the fact that leftists insist on denying FACTS, LOGIC AND REASON, and now they have somehow convinced government to play along. You and your Utopian-GOVERNMENT-GODS can call a dog a cat, or a boy a girl… But, it doesn't make it so. You can even force a society to play along. But, you can't erase reality. We ALL KNOW THE TRUTH, and no amount of propaganda will EVER CHANGE THAT.

    • Jack  •  Nov 22, 2017 at 11:47 pm

Ty, I don't care what you think. Get some counseling and then we will talk.

    • Ty needs help  •  Nov 25, 2017 at 12:02 am

A little of what Ty says about conservatives: (1) vindictive little maggots of men like so many tribalist conservatives.
      (2) We are not compatible, they just need to be beaten and cast out. (3) But conservatives LIED about their motivations. And that is from once comment.

"Vindictive little Maggots?" "They need to be beaten and cast out?"

Ty, you are sick. You are so full of hatred. Everything you hate about conservatives can easily be seen on the left if you weren't so bigoted and closed minded. Did your angry father pass his bigotry along to you? You aren't dumb, so they only reason I can see for you having such an obviously flawed view of things is that you are just raging inside with hate. Please get help.
