On January 31st, I sent an open letter to my “radio family” about my throat cancer and the course of treatments that would take me off the air for some time as I recovered. The response from listeners was overwhelming and deeply touching: we heard from literally thousands of people, many of whom had gone through their own experiences with similar health problems and come out strengthened and renewed. It was wonderfully encouraging to hear these stories of hope and determination. I’m convinced that the prayers and good wishes of so many of you have made an unmistakable contribution to a similar outcome in my situation. At this point, I’ve successfully completed my radiation and chemotherapy treatments, and after several weeks in the hospital I’m home with my family. In fact, my brother Harry and his wife and children will be joining us for the Passover holiday. I’m writing – columns, commentaries and progress on my book – but most of all I’m concentrating on building health and energy every day. As soon as my voice returns in full force, I’ll go back on the air for the daily broadcast. But following the advice of both my doctors and my radio team, I want to return only when I’m fully ready. Meanwhile, I’ve been blessed by the best fill-in hosts on radio: my good friends David Boze, Mark Davis and Arthur Brooks. The spring season, with its Easter and Passover holidays, is associated with fresh starts and new life. The Medved family looks forward to both in the weeks ahead.

I was so disheartened when I first heard of your illness. I am so thrilled to hear of your good progress. I went through breast cancer two years ago. As I asked others who had already been in my shoes about this and that and the other, one of the comments I heard over and over was:” I don’t remember…” Now every once in a while I will go to a place or see something that reminds me of that year and the treatment but most of the time…”I don’t remember…” Here is hoping …”I don’t remember…” for you and your family.

I listen here at work every day, as I have for many years. I’ve heard a couple of your “best of’s” and mistakenly thought you were back, but apparently not just yet. I pray for you and your family, to the God we both know and love. You do the Lord’s work my friend, no less, and will continue to do so for a long time to come. I look forward to your return as much as anyone. You have so much more that needs to be said.

  3. Kelly Walters  •  Mar 20, 2015 at 4:18 pm

We’ve missed you so much Michael. My sixteen year old keeps asking when you’ll be back on. She’s grown up listening to you since we were stationed at Fort Knox fourteen years ago. You may not know this, but you always cook dinner with me. LOL. At least you’re on when I’m cooking dinner. Anyway, glad things are going well for you.

Thank you for writing an update on your progress. It is reassuring to hear from you that you are healing and enjoying your family. You have been a part of our family for many years. You spend the holidays with us with your history shows while we prepare holiday meals. We wish you happiness and health. All of our family looks forward to your return to radio.

Michael, I’m so glad to hear you’re doing well, and as much as I (and all your fans) want to hear that voice again we do not want you to come back one day too soon and strain that voice. We want you back fully recovered and strong and it appears you are well on your way to that, thank God. And we continue to listen to the show with your fill-ins, and enjoying it while we wait. God bless you, Michael.

Michael, I only wish I could repay you for being a constant encouragement toward the truth. Hearing that you were undergoing cancer treatment was a heartbreak to me and my family. I am encouraged to hear that you are recovering. Your time away from the radio has been bittersweet. I miss your balance point of view and leadership however I get to enjoy David Boze twice a day. You, David, and Ben have been my friends every day for as long as I can remember. Please get well soon and pass along my best wishes to your family. God bless!

So glad to hear you are on the road to recovery. May the process be a speedy one! Prayers for you and your family. May you be able to enjoy this time together. Even if it’s forced by negative events, sometimes being made to step back and slow down for a while can be a gift. May it be so for you all!

Michael, So great to receive this communication from you. You have been in our thoughts and prayers, and will continue to be. Your fill-in hosts have been excellent, but will be looking forward to your return. Of course the important thing now is to rest and get better.

Speedy recovery, friend, but follow the doctors ’ advice. Don’t rush back – use the time you’ve been given to work at a relaxed pace. Your radio family prays for your recovery.

And thank God for modern medicine.

It’s so good to hear an update. Take whatever time you need to recover. We miss you, but want you to be ready to come back.

  16. Sally Swanson  •  Mar 20, 2015 at 8:17 pm

Michael, it is so wonderful to hear of your progress. You are so beloved and we all are waiting patiently to hear your wonderfully encouraging voice again. You are in the prayers of so many.

I know that you get thousands of referrals and info on cancer. I am going to give you one more, if I may. There is a television program that has been on the air for 15 years. It is called “Know the Cause.” ( It is hosted by Doug Kaufmann who has a PhD. in biology ( I believe). He has a theory about disease, especially cancer, that I know you will be interested in. You do not have to follow his protocol since you are under a doctors care. However, you will greatly benefit by hearing what this man has to say about how disease occurs and how to prevent it from returning.

Please go to this site and, at least, listen to what he has to say. You will NOT be wasting your time. It is the best information I have heard on health in my entire life. I have followed this man’s advice and been healed of a number of issues.

I realize that you have probably put much of your faith in the medical profession. But, they do not have all of the answers. Sometimes we have to look elsewhere.

God bless you with healing. In Yeshua’s name.

  17. G Storm  •  Mar 20, 2015 at 8:23 pm

Richest of God’s blessings during your recovery Michael!! We cannot WAIT to have you back! But like others have said, please don’t rush back to the studio before you’re medically ready. We know you miss us as much as we miss you, but take the time to properly recover. God bless you and yours,
    /s/ GS

Michael, not a day goes by when you’re not in our thoughts and prayers, we listen to you on the way home from work and look forward to that again soon. Happy Passover, enjoy your family and take care of yourself! Best regards, always, c & m

  19. Dave  •  Mar 20, 2015 at 8:54 pm

Godspeed Michael. I didn’t realize how good of a “lunchtime friend” you’d become until you weren’t there. Hopefully, the upside of this for you has been getting to spend more time with your lovely bride. Your fill-in hosts have been great, but we miss you and eagerly await your recovery and return as our cultural crusader. Hope you are 100% soon! :o)

  20. Sherry  •  Mar 20, 2015 at 9:25 pm

I was wondering about you this week because I had not heard anything. I catch your show when I can, some time the beginning, sometimes the end. But it is my go to during those three hours if I am in the car. So glad you are home and recovering. God bless you as you get stronger everyday.

  21. Bill Graham  •  Mar 20, 2015 at 9:33 pm

What wonderful news. I’m so happy that you are healing and recovering so well.
I truly miss hearing you on the radio daily– it was so cool to hear you sporadically in the last few weeks. Your voice sounds wonderful.
Your views on the world are so important to me– you truly reflect what I believe and say it so much more eloquently! I always appreciate your wisdom and compassion.
Hag sameah and take good care of yourself!

Michael, you are like family in our house since we discovered your radio show ten years ago. We have been tv-free for several years now because of you. My kids also have you to thank for the ever appropriate reminder to, “Focus like a laser beam.”

We have been praying for your full recovery and are overjoyed that you are healing surrounded by your family. I look forward to once again hearing you say “And another great day in this greatest nation on God’s green earth.”

Have enjoyed listening to you and watching you (your fox News commentary as well as your old movie review show with Jeffrey Lyons) for more years than I can count. It was quite disheartening to read about your cancer diagnosis but thank God the prognosis looks good and you will – His precious grace and our prayers-willing – be back in force, on the air soon. Looking forward to it.

  32. WCollins  •  Mar 21, 2015 at 1:13 pm

I was wondering how you were doing. I look forward to hearing you on the radio again.

I know from personal experience that it can be tough coming back from radiation and chemo, but with patience and time (and all the good drugs they give you), you’ll be back on the air before you know it. It’s one day at a time.

    God Bless!

I have so missed hearing your wonderful voice and did not know why you were no longer speaking on the radio. Thank you for writing this letter and how I wish I had known but will now be praying daily for your complete recovery. I don’t listen every day which is probably how I missed knowing why there was always a substitute. Love and get well soon!

God bless, Michael. You are one of a kind and we miss you on the radio! 🙂

  41. Sid Salcido  •  Mar 22, 2015 at 11:59 pm

Michael you are one of the most fair and balanced conservative conversationalists on the radio or on any media. You are very “Machiavellian” in the good sense of the word (meaning, you think realistically, not idealistically) and we need that. So, like all the folks above, I cannot WAIT until you return to give your practical, pragmatic opinion that is a necessary balance to the corrupt media in this world! Thank you Lord for giving Mr. Medved recovery!

  42. Don  •  Mar 23, 2015 at 2:37 pm

You’ve been such a great blessing to all of us Michael, may the Good Lord grant you a quick recovery so that you can once again be a ‘lamp unto our feet’.

Michael, blessings and prayers. I had Stage 3 B Lymphoma treated 1973 -1976 with both radiation & chemo. It is a trial, but having people who love & support & respond without hovering & pitying, along with prayer, makes all the difference. You have that, too. I came out a stronger, more patient & empathetic person, more appreciative of simple pleasures. You are so wise & perceptive already, but there is always a positive to every problem. God”s continuing care.

I only just read your note on the progress you’ve made and did not realize you had been in hospital. I’ve been praying for you, and truly miss your presence on air. You are like a warm, intelligent friend who has had to be absent far too long. I listen to you daily. I must say your “subs” are very engaging. Good as they are, however, you are impossible to replace. I await your take on all the events that passed while you were away, esp. your movie reviews.

However, much as I miss you, I don’t want you to come back one moment before you feel ready and at your strongest. Healing takes time. The Lord bless you, give you strength, healing, and restore you to us in His good timing, so you can continue the work He has made you to do. Don’t push yourself. Take it slow. When you come back, we want you back for as long as you wish to keep coming on air. We’ll wait and keep praying until you’re back, and afterward. May the Lord be glorified in all you do.

News of your illness may have saved me from facing the same diagnosis.

When a runny nose, sore throat, throat clearing and hoarseness went on for around a month, I scheduled an appointment with my doctor. While waiting several weeks to see him, my sore throat became a burning throat.

My doctor wanted to treat it with the usual antihistamines and nasal sprays, but having just heard about your diagnosis, I insisted on seeing an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist. Good thing I did. The ENT doctor examined me and gave me a diagnosis of Laryngopharyngeal Reflux (LPR, aka “silent reflux”), which if not treated could turn into throat or esophageal cancer.

I was told that I was unusual in that I came in so soon after symptoms developed. Often people go months or even years before getting the right diagnosis, usually because doctors haven’t been screening for LPR.

Because the food industry (with the blessing of the FDA in the 70’s) began using acidic preservatives in so many processed foods, maybe 50% of us are walking around with LPR and aren’t aware of it. That’s because most of us never have heartburn or any other indication, thus the name “silent reflux.” It isn’t until our throats start burning that we realize we’re dealing with something far different from the usual sore throat.

To spread the word about this problem, please consider having Dr. Jonathan E. Aviv on your program, author of Killing Me Softly From Inside: The Mysteries & Dangers Of Acid Reflux And Its Connection To America’s Fastest Growing Cancer.

After experiencing my fathers last days due to Alzheimer’s I fondly wish to you to return to health and rejoining your radio family . I hope you agree with me that we need nationwide long term health insurance reform so that families do not have to deplete their financial resources taking care of long chronic illness as Alzheimer’s and other genetic diseases . I thank you in advance.

Michael, not being able to talk as before, can be very interesting. Others think your actually listening to what they are saying when you can’t reply at the normal conversation pace. Enjoy it. They will look you in the eye and wait for your approval. Pace and length of speech will eventually get back to normal. Maybe a little raspy, but that’s ok. Drink lots of water, eat more often, and buy a few new belts, shirts, pants, and jackets. Don’t worry about the shoes, they will still fit. Enjoy the spring. We wait for your return. Tom

I started working right out of high school and have always been at a workplace where I have been able to tune in. Haven’t missed many shows in the last 10 years or so. If you listen to Limbaugh in the morning you basically hear what a lot of other shows are going to talk about later on in the day, so I appreciate the variety in the programming schedule. An hour or two on current items and then an hour on a social issue or an author. I will be looking forward to your return.

Many years Medhead living in China. On the day Mike made his cancer announcement I went to the hospital where they told me I needed surgery for a “”benign tumor” on my neck. With further testing benign ended up being malignant and I am going to have to do chemo/radio to begin in mid-April. I need to do the treatment in Guangzhou China, as I have no health insurance. ($$$) This may God’s plan (or joke) as one of my major cancer risk factor is air pollution, which is what brought me to China in that I sell products/techniques to reduce air pollution from coal-fired power stations particularly.. No health insurance is explained by my limited success in this pursuit. I hope Mike talks about his treatment, so I know more what is entailed. Even though China’s medical care is not universally available for all people I am going to go to one of the best – a hospital that sends 25 professional to MD Anderson in Houston, still I don’t know for sure what if anything Americans hospitals would do differently. One good thing is that I can speak both Mandarin and Cantonese both very well, which is completely necessary for my upcoming therapy. (Guangzhou is the modern name for Canton, where the word Cantonese as in Cantonese language comes from.) Mike has throat cancer and mine is tonsil cancer. Both cancers have a high recovery rate. Had the power industry in China been half as “progressive” as China’s hospitals, China would have maybe half the pollution, I would be a lot richer – probably with health insurance, and maybe I wouldn’t even have cancer! When I get out of the hospital I’m going to make these facts known as widely as possible

It was the early 2000s and a friend had mentioned listening to an incredible talk radio host and said that I just HAD to listen to him. When I asked him who it was, my friend said “Micheal Medved. He’s brilliant!” I said, “Michael Medved? The movie guy? Wow. Loved his PBS show with Jeffrey Lyons. I’ll give him a listen!” When I tuned in, I was hooked! Another friend even passed me contraband CDs of your show for a while until I could go out and buy an MP3 player in order to become a MedHead and download your shows on my own. Sadly, that second friend, after meeting his future liberal wife, has turned to “The Dark Side” and is now a liberal. But, the impact of those times remains with me still and has only served to solidify my rationale for being “right”! I must admit being somewhat of an addict to your show, and have bought many of your history CDs as well. You have done more than merely “entertain my brain”. You’ve been like a teacher … and dare I say .. a mentor, to me as well. You are in my thoughts and prayers, and while your guest hosts do a wonderful job, I look forward to having you back on the airwaves again as the greatest host and mentor “on God’s green Earth”!

Michael, there is not a better radio host in the world. Your show is nothing short of magnificent. I really do not have the words to describe the magnitude by which you surpass your competition. I have no doubt your advertisers are thrilled to be part of your program. Take as much time as you need to get well. Then after you’re well, take some time off to just relax. Then come back! We miss you!

Michael – I have listened to whenever I could. Not sure for how long. I miss hearing your insights and wisdom. Hope you had a joyous Sedar. I am looking forward to your return to radio.

I am thrilled to hear of your great progress Michael. Please consider praying/meditating over Psalms 91 as it will lift your spirits immensely and greatly aid in your ongoing recovery.
I have a wonderful friend and former missionary doctor (currently a surgeon); he would be the first to offer that particular Rx so I’m passing it on to you.
    God Speed!

Thank you for keeping us informed on your progress. Prayers continue for your recovery.
Thank you for keeping us informed re: political updates through your three good friends David Boze, Mark Davis and Arthur Brooks. They are so helpful during this minefield of ideas both noble and not! Your sage advice is an anchor for me during such a trying time. May God bless you and continue to keep you well .
