No, it did not need to be so long. Nevertheless, Thanos was a surprisingly great villain (especially for Marvel), and yes the action, humor, and serious drama is all balanced quite well, all things considered.

The actual runtime for Avengers: Infinity War is almost 2 hours and 30 minutes. It was originally going to be 2 hours and 36 minutes.

    !!!SPOILER ALERT!!!

I give it two stars (although my scale is out of five stars rather than four).
While the action, special effects, and acting are all up to the usual superb standard of Marvel Studios, this film suffers from an ailment that has been plaguing the Marvel Studios films as of late, that being the unchecked escalation of power of their characters.
Super hero films thrive on the battle between good and evil, and are only interesting and fascinating because of the uncertainty of who will win that battle, and the story of how they struggle to do so.
With the advent of the infinity stones however comes a collection of forces so powerful that they essentially act as God himself, all-powerful and simply shrugging at any opposing force. As is displayed in the movie, once Thanos has just two of the infinity stones he already is near unstoppable, and his quest to then collect more of the stones and grow in power and strength is all but certain.
Writing a character into the movie that has such great, total, and sure power creates an environment in which the end is already known, and the victor already obvious. It takes all of the fight away from the movie because any fight becomes pointless, and it is no longer a struggle to win a battle, but a struggle against an inevitable fact.
So I give two stars (out of five) to Avengers Infinity War, because it was less of a super hero movie than it was helpless peasants we were supposed to call "heroes" fighting against a figure made as powerful as God himself.
