Leave a commentMichael,
The film was excellent but 10 minutes too long, the time required for Captain Philips to totally break-down while writing a letter to his wife and being tortured mentally and physically by his
captors. Didn’t read the book, but the director had several opportunities to curtail
the torture, instead holding-on like a bulldog. Frankly am surprised that The Captain chose to return to
the sea after his mind-bending experience. Imagine he is a person of modest means, as the film implied and needed the money. Who knows? Amusing that you might challenge Hanks use of
an accent as superfluous not the unremitting torture both physical and mental. Thanks!
Great movie. High tension even though I knew from the news what was going to happen. Hanks’ accent worked for me. It connected Phillips to the seafarers of New England. It reminded me he was a true sailor. Hanks’ work in the final scenes is some great acting! I shed a tear of relief with him.
Small complaint, the M/V Maersk Alabama is a container ship, not a tanker.
The Maersk Alabama is actually a Container Cargo vessel – not a tanker as stated in the movie review. Was fantastic that the US Navy participated fully in the making of this film. So many in today’s generation do not appreciate the sacrifices and dedication of our military as they perform duty in some of the worst places on this planet. Yes – I am a proud 29 year retired career military officer and have a great admiration for the men and women attached to CTF 151 (Combined Task Force for Counter – Piracy) .
I did not like this movie at all! No, wait….I HATED this movie. The idea that 3 men in a dinghy were able to capture this big ship and 50 crew men WAS PREPOSTEROUS! I was so frustrated at this point. I wish they had mentioned why there was not ONE firearm on the ship! They knew they were in hostile waters. And the first inclination of the crew was to RUN AND HIDE? C’mon, where is fight? And lastly, the movie was SO SLOW, I would’ve much preferred to watch paint dry!
Everyone claims this man a hero, but the movie made him a blithering coward.
