I actually urged my husband to get tickets for Lady Bird, based on the rave reviews, because we'd gone to see Star Wars was sold out. That said, I couldn't disagree more with Medved's review. I am not Catholic, but am Christian, and didn't find humor in "Lady Bird's" total irreverence – such as discussing her early, and ongoing, masturbation experiences with her friend, while they lay on the floor of the church with their feet up on the wall, munching on the stash of communion crackers they found in the school/church cupboard. This is what passes today for humor? Meanwhile, her obedience to all the Catholic prayers and rites only underscores it's all a joke to her, of which she's making the best experience she can. Likewise I found no humor in, or sympathy with, her tiresome and disrespectuful relationship and dialogue with her mother or other family members, including common use of the F-word in her home with no one batting an eye. It may be common today, but it's a sadder world for it – and certainly not a source of humor or admiration to this film fan. Hearing LadyBird and her mother bicker in the car for what seemed an interminable time should be have been a clue. My husband and I hoped it would get better. But, alas, the rest of the film was equally unbearable. We left about 25 minutes in – more than enough for us. P.S. We eventually saw Star Wars. If you want a film with actual humor, sympathetic relationships, thrilling conflict, suspense and inspiration – there's a film to go see.

    Overrated and slight.
