    Whoa! That’s a little rough, don’t you think? I’ll admit there was a huge disconnect between the Stooge-esque marketing of this picture and the rather blunt product itself, but given that, the movie delivered. Great camera work, rainbo brite colors of Miami in the 90s, an accurate portrayal of gym life in the age of steroids, and pitch perfect performances from everyone involved. Tony Shalhoub never puts a foot wrong, as usual, and Dwayne Johnson manages to play a one-dimensional character without turning him into a cartoon. That’s no small thing for a man who rose to fame playing a muscled one-dimensional cartoon.

    Dislike these characters if you want to–and that’s the point of the film, in some ways–but don’t confuse their lack of character with a lack of talent and skill in portraying them. This film deserves 3 stars and would be worth another half if the ads had more accurately represented the movie.
