T5 had entirely too many fractures in the plot. There were so many time twists as to make the movie very difficult to follow, not to mention just plain ridiculous.

It was a disappointment. Unfortunately, the last three films in the series do not compare to the first two.

Comparing it to the first two is simply not fair because nobody has ever done a sequel to a James Cameron film that lived up to the predecessor. No director except arguably Peter Jackson has come around since Cameron who has his talent for action films. Comparing it to parts 3 and 4, however, is fair, and this one was far more entertaining than those.

I agree with Medved that the action, effects and Arnold were fun. I think the callbacks to scenes and characters from the other films worked. Usually I don’t think a sequel repeating stuff from the past movies is a good idea, but this movie usually referenced the past films as a way of very quickly introducing an idea that took much longer to explain the first time. The main villains of this film that factor into the climax are the new, fresh elements and they worked very well for me. I simply don’t agree with Medved that the other lead characters were charisma-free. I especially liked Jason Clarke and Emilia Clarke.

The fact is, in real life, time travel would be very confusing and unpredictable. It’s not a requirement that we perfectly understand how time travel works in these movies. The fact that no one can understand it is successfully played for comedy here. And, ultimately, all the time travel in the Terminator movies ever was was a device to get the heroes fighting the villains. It’s how the McGuffin of which character people are trying to kill or protect gets created. A sci-fi action movie does not exist to tell a coherent story, it exists to provide entertainment.
