    The Great Gatsby movie is the most oppressively garish film it has ever been my misfortune to see.

    Half way into it I could not endure anymore and walked out. If you thought the 1974 version was awful this one is worse.

    @kick, Ditto — though I didn’t walk out.

    Brief hip-hop! It was the most significant aspect of the first half of the movie. Then it never recovered in building enough characterization to make the story worthy of anyone’s attention. How this gets twice the rating of “Star Trek: Into Darkness” is unfathomable. Worse action, worse characters, worse story and worse sense of itself!

    I really enjoyed this movie. I think DeCaprio and Tobey should win oscars. Great performances! Much better than Now You See Me (* * ).

    Stilted dialogue, boring. What to do with that script?? Plus I deeply dislike Mulligan. Liked the hip hop though.

    This movie is the best movie I’ve seen this year at least, and I doubt anything coming up will surpass it. Perfect casting, well acted. DiCaprio was brilliant. The use of music was effective, as was the cinematography. And the costume design was impeccable. In the end, though, the appeal of this movie is the story, which is very well executed, (it followed the book to a T, by the way, and I have read it four times, including earlier this year), and lies in being drawn to Gatsby himself, who is as mysterious as he is charming, but always reaching for something…. If you thought the book was good, this just may be even better.
